Well respected speakers that you don't like

I hate bright sounding speakers, here are some examples.

All of Celestion, Thiel, Magico, Martin Logan, Wilson, and YG. Nearly any speaker with ribbon tweeters.

I hate muffled sounding speakers. Here are some of those.

Meridian, KEF 105, B&w 801's. Has anyone here looked inside to see the B&W 801 crossover? It weighs 28 pounds.

Almost afraid to ask what you do like. Plasma?

cheers,

AJ

Ha, so you don't like bright and you don't like muffled. That doesn't leave a lot... No Focal in your bright list? I mean I love them but they are revealing as hell in the high so I would have expected them in your list.

1. Thiel

2. (puts flack jacket on)- Sonus Faber

For me I notice quite a bit of difference between different models of SF speakers. I've quite enjoyed the Amati Futuras the two times I've had a chance for somewhat extended listening. I can't say that for any others I've heard, which include Strad, Guarneri and Ellipsa SE (at least)

Yes, plasmas are great. I also like Duntech, Dunlevy, Acoustats with DD servo amp, KEF LS50's, stacked Quads, Quad 63's, Spendor SP1s, Zellaton, MBL's, Kaiser Kawero's, and other ESL's as long as they are direct driven.

Agree on the latest incarnations of SF-- they seem to have lost the plot

the Franco era Guarneri Homage and Extremas were the Standouts

Franco Serblin was the brains behind all great SF designs.

:sigh:LOL I sure enjoyed my Reynaud version 2 Offrande Supreme's when I had them, a good doctor offered me what I paid for them and I sold them, bad move. I felt they were very musical when used with tubes, but I'm with you on the other speakers you noted... :D

Cool. I was largely oblivious to his stuff before, Roger seems to make some very interesting amplifiers. I assume you are nowhere near Santa Barbara, being "Ozark" Tom?

Down here in the Ozarks of Missouri. Modjeski has been working on amps with Jim Vaughn's latest plasma speakers. Jim and Roger both lives in Santa Barbara. Audio Beat gave Vaughn-Wavelength room the best sound at RMAF last year.

Small world. One of our local SAS club members has a Vaughn plasma triode which I listened to recently. Between the club and all the shows, I get a chance to hear quite a few approaches.

cheers,

AJ

Hum...

I forgot this key element ! So stupid I am !
Some speakers are VERY sensitive to the associated gear.
I never heard JMR speakers with a great tube amp. Always demonstrated with SS gear. And yes, they could sound stunning with a tube amp, like all the other brands I mentioned.
I should have stated " I never had the chance to listen to those brands with the right amp, so I never liked them ".
I remember that I listened once to the SF GM with a Krell amp and found them horrible and my first thinking was " what the hell is going on with all the love for those....??". When I listened to them at a friend's place with 2 x 275's, they were very good.

I ran the same version of the Offrande for several years with tubes and it is one speaker I regret selling too. I plan on buying the new version in the near future. Still have the tube amps hanging around. The US importer runs them with Blue Circle and AN.

I've read loads of positive reviews about the Paradigm S8s, but once I had a chance to listen to them I was very disappointed.

I think every speaker has an "optimum" configuration and setup, and so can sound awesome when done right. However, there are several that seem to wrk in most places, and others that I have usually never heard work very well at all. Magico and YG come immediately to mind. Thiel's and Maggies generally need proper equipment pairing and are finicky to setup and so usually sound unbalanced, but I have heard both sound awesome too. The big KEF blades don't ring my bell either (shouty and boomy). Sonus Faber's seem too tame and overdamped.

After living with panels for some years now I guess my biggest complaint is that most cone speakers have a very noticeable imbalance between the tweeter and woofer. They don't sound "of a whole" to me anymore.
