Well respected speakers that you don't like

What amp did you hear the 801D with? Maybe the damping factor of the amp was not high enough. Or maybe the amp wasn't powerful enough. Just a thought.
It has been too long ago to tell you. But most likely it was Classe as most of the demos of B&W in Europe are with Classe. It was also with Classe that I have got convinced about the Diamond series.

Oh ok, no problem. I haven't heard Classe in years, so I don't know how the recent stuff sounds...

Very interesting thread. I agree with many of the speakers discussed.

In addition, how do you guys feel about YG? I have yet to hear a setup with the them that I like.

Hi Eric,
Without the grills it is still a bit too wild for my eyes. But he, I think the optics are maybe even more about personal taste than anything else. But with the grill on I think the looks ar quite ok. Size and shape are in a good balance and with grill the materials and finish seems to match well. Thanks for posting the pics. Contrary to you I like being busy with auditioning and reading stuff about audio equipment. Surely the claim it puts on your savings is not so nice...

No standing waves with these guys due to design. They also reach extremely low (very tight musical bass) and are quite efficient. I wanted to upgrade my old speakers of course, but I wanted to look for and shop for them correctly. So, first, I studied on how to listen to speakers for audiotion, I learned about design and it's effects on sound, etc. That was before 6 months of auditions. I can appreciate gear as much as the next guy, but it was grueling and exhausting. I came home fatigued a number of times. (Getting the money up for them was also very very difficult). I just don't wish to ever have to do it again. I'm also of the school of thought that states if I'm not in the market for something why go out of my way to look at it? (If it's not broken don't fix it). I hate audio magazines too. That's all just me though.

Eric, it's all good because you've got the "Shark"

Mike - I hope to hear those at RMAF. Will let you know.

Mike,

YG speakers are typically displayed in quite a few rooms at RMAF. The only time I've personally liked them was with MSB front end and amplification.

They've come out with some new products over the last year. Let's see how they sound next week in Denver!

You going to be there? I'll PM you (and anyone else who wants it) - my cell number. Call me when you get there and we can meet up.

Yes, I'll be there. Plan to be at RMAF Fri and Sat.

Got your number and sent you mine. Let's get together for a cocktail or a bite on Sat eve...

We'll be able to share impressions on what we've heard at the show - including some of the speakers on this thread.

Bose 901s...:D

A friend of mine owned a pair of these and never hooked up the equalizer! ("What...it's part of the system? I just thought it was an accessory.") :bonkers:

I have yet to hear a pair of Thiel speakers I liked from the 2.5s all the way up to the 3.7s with the Apple Pie Pan Drivers. Admittedly None I heard were in a full blown quality setup. The 3.7s I heard were driven by NAD Master Series 5 and left so much to be desired. The owner has since upgraded to a Boulder Integrated but I have not had a chance to go back and hear them again.

All models I have heard were just too bright for me and always seem to lack real bass.

Who said these are well respected??
Actually I owned a pair back in the early 70's and thought they rocked. Today I am all too aware of their weaknesses.

That was my ill-attempt at humor, hence the smiley face! But hey, some people think Bose is the pinnacle of audio fidelity.

There are three very well respected speakers that I don't like in the plus/minus $75K, $125K and $200K ranges.

The first one didn't play with majesty and authority, the middle one had a tweeter that made my ears bleed and the expensive one didn't sound musical to me.

I am not going to name them.

Love the Shark.. OK instead of poking at other peoples choices..I'll point out my own horror choices. Both bought and sold within 60 days.

Ok... here's stuff I bought as a young lad in Highschool in 1980 before i had any idea of how to pick a speaker. Drum rolls - Peace Frog The Doors and alarm clock bells from Pink floyd's Time that was how I picked it.

Infinity Reference Standard Monitors the Infinity RSM. Good reviews... how??...I dunno. I musta been deeef.

AKG 240 headphones... because they advertised bass.

current stuff... that gets good reviews but seems to have issues...

Audio Engine A5. Super flexy midbass driver cone.. yeah yeah I know it comes with an amp... better to buy a decent pair of headphones.

In regards to Infinity (redemption...coming ) not being so bad .... I did buy the Infinity Reference Standard RS1 and RS1-b (two sets) both of which I have enjoyed IMMENSELY when properly set up flanked with Entec SW-1's. Probably the most outrageous blasting fun I have had with speakers... I have heard them set up wrong..and then they can be pretty bad- but when they were right in the right room - they were pretty damn special....

I hate bright sounding speakers, here are some examples.

All of Celestion, Thiel, Magico, Martin Logan, Wilson, and YG. Nearly any speaker with ribbon tweeters.

I hate muffled sounding speakers. Here are some of those.

Meridian, KEF 105, B&w 801's. Has anyone here looked inside to see the B&W 801 crossover? It weighs 28 pounds.

Celestion, a brand from the past. Their most famous speaker of all time the original honeycomb SL600's were so not bright.

Thiel - bright, Yessiree. Regardless I still liked them 25 years ago if paired with the right stuff. Had a pair of CS-2's with a Linn table and a pair of Quicksilver mono blocks, boy, a blast from the past. I used to get teased about them, saying I needed a pair of dirty old socks placed in front of the tweeters, but the trusty old Linn and Quicksilvers looked after that.

When Celestion went to the metal dome tweeters, they became very bright sounding. I was a Celestion dealer back in the 80's when I had an audio business. I also sold Thiel, but when I picked up the Goetz speakers, the Thiels quit selling. Goetz imaged much better than the Thiel's, and never sounded bright.

DITTO,

I think it gets down to matching electronics with speakers to room that makes a speaker ( any speaker) be a win-win or a total bore.
