Devialet 400 review by Soundstage Magazine

Mike,

I like the blue foam around the base of the Focals.

Helps prevent the cleaning lady from damaging the speakers with the vacuum.:-)

Exactly! Ha! I took them off today. Man, I freaking love these speakers. With the Devialet, it's so musical and sweet sounding.

I'm going to try something different next week. I bought this: http://www.neutrik.com/en/accessories/aes/ebu-impedance-transformers/naditbnc-m

$10 on eBay. Figured, what the heck? I wanted to see if there was any sonic improvement of the AES/EBU over coax.

I will then run BNC out of the Lumin into the Neutrik and AES/EBU into the Devialet. I just love the stability of the Lumin (vs my computer) and the great Lumin app and ability to stream tidal too. A Lumin D1 or T1 could be a great partner with the Devialet. We will soon see.

Yes, the Neutrik will allow you use existing cables, but the Devialet's digital inputs are transformer coupled so you could build your own SPDIF to AES/EBU cable:

I need BNC to AES/EBU. The Lumin has a BNC out. The BNC is 75 ohm, and the AES/EBU is 110 ohm, so you need to convert for it. No?

Like I said the Devialet's digital inputs are transformer coupled, the key is the cable.

Use a 110 ohm cable and connect the - and ground wires to the sleeve on the BNC end.

Since you're a Lumin dealer, why not ask them to mod one of your units to give you an AES/EBU output.

I use a Audience Au24 SE AES/EBU cable to connect my PS Audio PWT to the D400 master.

The case is not the issue...that is strictly lifesyle, its the SOUND and the concept of using cheap/efficient power to give grunt and using class A to influence the SQ. Stasis used class B (not A/B) for current drive.

ADH is just the modern version of the STASIS power idea of the 1990s that had much attention at the time.
Think evolution, with the current state of play in global tech, as opposed to 20 years ago...

Revolutionary for me is to get Class D alone to play with the SQ of Class A. That would be real left field stuff.

I respectively disagree. If that was the case, we would have been hearing about Devialet vs STASIS a lot earlier. I think the concept is perhaps 10% similar, but overall quite different. Stasis amps, if I remember correctly, still had some sizable cases, power supplies, etc.

And no stasis amp had a preamp, DAC, Phonostage, SAM, etc. to boot. :)

The point being, there really is no comparison.

You compare the case size, I am comparing the amplification concept...ADH vs Stasis and I made this comparison in 2012, as its the firtst thing that hit me when I heard about Devialet (Which I first heard in Zurich 2012).

Design wise, no comparison for chassis.

Not a biggie, just saying the IDEA is not new to combine 2 amp classes in this way, playing to the strength of each. Thus, NOT revolutionary.

Also, I notice you dont sell your Pass amps or tube amps...so there is a difference afterall.

Different systems Norman. The tube amps are up for sale. I will have the Pass with the Strads and the Devialet with the Focal (the French connection!).

Understood.

Devs are a real looker for the modernist interior design. Works real well with the sterotypical Wall Street Banker NYC penthouse you see in Movies or Iron man's Pad (Tony Stark)...though the colours of darTZeel are fitting with the Iron Man motif.

Ok I've been demoing the D200 for the last 11 days and the last two days punishing it at some pretty high and low decibels (+4.0). The unit was getting semi hot but not even close to a pure Class A amp. The TAD's have open up to levels I haven't experience before. My room is 16 X43 9ft ceilings family room and kitchen combined. The bass is super tight and authorative without over taken my room or the music. The highs do not exhibit a hint of sibilance. A very clean sound without being sterile, is it a tube guys sound probably not. I don't know what else to say but this thing is a retired mans dream good sound, compact, wife friendly and simple. I'm stoked, is it better than the seperates I've own over the years probably not but it's definetly in the ball park. The french did a nice job with the Devialet, they just need to get off their high horse and have a more informative manual. Searching on the internet for answer to questions about their units is time consuming.

I'll actually be comparing the D400 to a challenger next weekend. The NAD M12/M22 combo. There's been almost no press on the NAD pair since it was release last fall. I loved the M2 so I'm anxious to see what NADs come up with this go round. Really good specs on the NAD.

John,

My D400 is stunning. I'm not close enough to retirement but I love this thing and can listen for hours upon hours without fatigue. I am tickled pink and just gave it better cables. Holy cow! It's even better.

The only reason to sell it is to get the D800.

Isn't the D1600 coming out soon?

What cables? I've wondered if I should do something beyond the stock crystal cable to connect them. Any gains there?

Maybe I should wait. Ha!

I'm using a Shunyata digital but I borrowed some Kimber select copper speaker cable and I really love it. I bet even the silver or hybrid could be even better. I don't want to know.

Ok would the Devialet be consider a high current amp or does that not come into play since this is a hybrid Class A, Class D combo? Also has anyone personally on Audio Shark played with AIR and compared it to their USB input and or experience any drop out?
