Devialet 400 review by Soundstage Magazine

I think the solution has many great innovations that has the potential to be revolutionary. At this early time, I prefer to stick with the evolutionary term. There is a lot of potential here for an industry shake down but it is early days yet.

I can see myself owning a product like this in the future.

huh? Don't understand the second sentence. As for the first sentence, you don't consider inventing a new hybrid class A/D amp revolutionary? You don't consider harnessing high powered class A goodness into a box a fraction of the size previously required revolutionary? How many patents are on this thing? I'm betting many. How about reimagining the remote control? The Devialet remote is totally revolutionary compared to every other high end remote I've seen. And let's not forget how all the inputs and outputs can be dynamically reconfigured on the fly, that's revolutionary in my book. I don't see any other amps that can do it. Pretty much everything about the devialet is revolutionary from the record breaking specs to the appearance to the circuit design to the technology. The thing can be hung on the wall for Pete sake. You can turn a single unit into mono blocks without using an analog connection. That's revolutionary as hell. Compare this to PASS or Bryston or McIntosh or Krell, how have their amps changed in the last decade? Tiny tweaks and a new face plate. Now that's evolutionary.

Well said. I originally said and thought I could build a better system for the same money. Frankly, I couldn't come close and even if I could financially, it wouldn't be close in sound.

Features, configurability and functionality aside, I've been making notes of the sound of the Devialet. It has a slightly sweet, slightly warm and liquid sound with amazing PRAT, depth of soundstage and the blackest backgrounds I've EVER heard. Such a controlled sound too, but with finesse. Every piano note is so delicately reproduced. Great separation. Incredible at digging out the finest details in recordings, yet not making bad recordings sound worse, quite the opposite in fact. The hall ambience of live recordings is clearly captured. When listening to the Devialet and quite possibly because of the black backgrounds, I feel like I'm all that much closer to the recorded event.

The ADH sound is quite something. It sounds like nothing else you've heard before (in a good way). What is ADH? It is a hybrid Class A / Class D operation throughout. Both amps work together in parallel. The class A drives output voltage and controls the sonic signature while the Class D amp drive the output current needed for high power.

How about some pics of those focals?

I moved them with the help of my pack mule (aka the wife). Apparently yelling "heave woman" isn't an endearing term.

They are on wheels, so once out of the box, they roll around easily.

Sound? Musical, balanced, effortless, big! I've always loved the focal sounds, engineering and efficiency.

LOL, well congrats! Sexy! And I agree, everytime I've heard the utopia line I was impressed and the scala is the sweet spot for sure.

Chris is gonna tell you to paint your wall though. : )

Sounds like somebody is eating some DSP crow pie.....lol. I knew you would eventually come around. So is a second Devialet set-up on the way for the Strads upstairs. I need your XS pre for my 150's. :D

Hehe. True, it's only Saturday. And he usually plays hockey on the weekends. Maybe he'll get a bump on the noggin......and I'll get a call ??

Have you guys forgotten Nelson Pass with Stasis power in the 1990s? Class A voltage with class B current drive? This is just and moden evolution of the same big idea.

But the Devialet is Class A/Class D.

Wishful thinking. :) I play in all the old, fat guy hockey leagues I can find, 3-4 times week, year around. Damn, that has to be somewhat good for the old ticker.

I think I'm going to get another set of VAC monoblocks, and run direct from my Berkeley or Lampi dacs (getting a newer version Lampi w/preamp). This was the best sound I have ever had by a very large margin. There was pure magic with that combination. Even my Pass XS-150's are nowhere near that sound quality YET. I'm working hard to make them sound as awesome as yours do on the Strads. My new room is kicking my butt right now. I may be too damped ?? So I hopefully won't have to buy the pricey XS Preamp.

Jerry - I moved your Polymer discussion to its own thread.

Mike,

I like the blue foam around the base of the Focals.

Helps prevent the cleaning lady from damaging the speakers with the vacuum.:-)
