Unboxing the Magico S3 mk2

Kuoppis - why are they so close to the front wall? space constraints?

Basically yes. But they are further away than it might appear, about 2 ft.

I have about 400 hours on my S3MK2s and I agree with Kuoppis’s description of how they have changed over time. One thing I noticed in particular was that around the 150-250 hour mark it seemed that there was a drop-off in sound definition in the mid range. Not sure if I was mistaken, but it seemed to ‘come back’. I think I posted something on that and Kuoppis alleviated my anxiety by saying that it will come back. Thankfully it did!

As for placement, the rear part of each speaker is 2.5 feet away from the rear wall, the distance between the center of each speaker is 8 feet, and my listening position is about 10 feet from the center of each speaker. They are angled in so that the center of each speaker overlaps about 2 feet (I think - haven’t measured this) behind me. My room is about 15 feet deep by about 25 feet wide. They sound best (overall soundstage has more depth, but interestingly no big difference in bass - it is more mid range and treble) when they are 3-4 feet away from the rear wall, but that is not practical for me as my room doubles up as a lounge and TV area. So have compromised!

Kuoppis, have you experimented with any toe-in?

Yes I have, quite a bit.

As I like the speakers to disappear (which the S3 mk2s do quite well), my starting point was with very little toe-in at all.

To get broader soundstage and better imaging I then gradually increased toe-in until I had a nice balance between the size and height of centre image and a nice stereo-effect. Overall I would say I have them toed-in only very slightly, maybe 5-10 degrees .

This is what suits my tastes best.

How about you?

Kuoppis - what is the distance between the middle of each speaker and your listening position? Just curious. I am no mathematiciam but I would guesstimate that my speakers are angled in by about 10-15 degrees.

I was just thinking the same when I read your description [emoji3].

Our setups appear to be quite similarly positioned. I think I have pretty much an even triangle of 9-10 feet, maybe a slightly higher distance from listening position to the speakers than between them.

Very similar. My triangle is 8 feet (between speakers) and 10 feet from each speaker to my ears, with the speakers placed 2.5 feet from the rear wall amd the speakers angled in about 10-15 degrees.

I was amazed at how much better the soundstage was when I placed the speakers (the rear part, not the front) 4 feet from the wall, with much less angle in (maybe 5-10 degrees). But that was not workable for me given that my room is multi-purpose.

The lesser toe-in also suit my tastes well.

It won’t be long for my Pewter pair to get here:yahoo1:
Couple of weeks a Suncoast birdie told me!
Larry

Exciting, that’s great to hear Larry.

Who says grownups don’t feel the excitement of waiting for Santa (I know Mike has been called many things).
