Transferring Ripped CDs From An External HD To Roon Nucleus

I want to transfer all my ripped CDs To Roon Nucleus. I have a Glyph 250m external HD that stores the files I want to transfer.

Also, what cable do I need to go from the HD to Roon Nucleus? I think for the HD end I need a cable with Fire Wire 800. But I'm not sure about that and I'm not sure about the Roon Nucleus end? Is it doable without a cable? Thank you!

I've returned my loan Nucleus, but I imagine the easiest method is to connect your Glyph hard drive (I have one too) to your Windows PC via a USB cable. Likewise connect Nucleus to PC via USB. Your PC should see both devices and a simple Copy & Paste should be all that's needed, but do a small bunch of folders at a time so transfer times are not too long. I wouldn't use the Glyph's Firewise or E-Sata sockets. Peter

Thank you for the info. Does it matter whether I use a USB 2.0 vs a USB 3.0 cable or switch?

Essentially no. Your system will use the fastest USB protocol it can, but it caters for the slowest individual component or link. Use 3.0 cables if you have them but any ones will do. Transfter rate will be dictated by the most primative link in the chain - Glyph, Nucleus, PC or cables. Whichever cables you use, you'll get a bit-perfect copy where you want it. I hope that helps. Someone else may have a clever way to do the job more quickly or possibly without a PC acting a controller! Peter

The type of cable is irrelevant. It is simply copying from one location to another. I might suggest copying to the computer from the external drive first and then copy the folders from there to the Nucleus. Probably a lot more efficient than trying to do a direct jump across.

I already have all my ripped CDs on both the computer internal HD and the external HD. So I should run a USB cable from the Roon Nucleus to where? The external HD or direct to the PC? I'm out of ports on my PC. I may have to purchase a USB hub/switch.

There is no need to transfer the ripped files from the external hard drive to the Nucleus. Just connect the Nucleus to the external hard drive with a USB cable. Any well-built USB cable should work. A USB cable goes for less than $10 bucks on Amazon or Monoprice.

Then, go to Roon "Settings" and under "Storage" add the music folder from the external hard drive where you keep your music. Roon will then automatically add all of the files stored in the hard drive to the Roon library.

I have a Glyph Studio external HD that I have all my ripped CD music on, but there are no USB ports on it. How do I connect the Nucleus to the Glyph external HD when the Glyph has no USB ports?

You could go through a network, but then you are going through a router, etc. Or connect you computer to the USB and transfer the files to your Nucleus. No matter what people say it is best for sound quality to play your files locally.

This is another type of USB 3.0 cable that is more common on certain kind of devices. I have seen them on cameras and USB hubs, among other devices. Easy to find cable at Best Buy or other shops. It will have the standard USB that you are used to on the other end.

I didn't know that was a USB port. I was looking for the flat type of USB port. But, my external HD is already connected to my computer. So, I need to come out of the Nucleus with a USB cable also to the computer? I don't have any open USB ports on my computer though.

I've ordered another USB switch/hub to add extra USB ports. I hope that will work. It has four USB ports and inputs for two computers. I have four cables connected to a USB hub already. I hope I can chain the two USB hubs together for more USB ports. I hope I'm not making this any more complicated than it needs to be.

You need a USB cable with Type A on one end and Type B on the other.
You connect the Type B end to the hard drive and the Type A to the Nucleus. No need for USB hubs. Then in Roon, you need to select the hard drive storage as a source for your music.

You said earlier that all your CDs were on the PC and the Glyph. Is this correct? If so, you don't need to connect the Glyph to the PC. Your PC has how many (flat type) USB sockets? Most have at least 2, but even if only 1, then put the Glyph aside and connect the Nucleus to this socket via a USB cable. Your PC will (should) recognise the Nucleus as an external device (use Windows Explorer to find it if you're unfamiliar) and then open the folder where your music is stored on your PC (probably under Music) and grab a section of this music (it will be in lots of sub-folders) by highlighting them, right click and choose Copy. Then open the Nucleus and go to where you want your music to end up, then right click and choose Paste. When done, check that it's worked by playing something via Roon through your system. Go back to PC Music and repeat until you have the lot transferred.

Mark says it's even easier by linking the Glyph to the Nucleus and asking the Nucleus to do the transfer all by itself! In my earlier posting I suggested this may be possible but wasn’t sure. I presume this could equally be done by connecting the PC to the Nucleus but that's probably less reliable as the PC is full of other stuff that may cause problems. Good luck.

But the HD already has a cable connecting it to the computer and the HD has no other USB port.

Please re-read my previous post. Your Glyph doesn't need 2 USB sockets. Only your PC needs 2. Connect Glyph to the PC and the Nucleus to the PC and off you go following previous detailed advice. As already said, you may not even need your Glyph or your PC (you'll certainly need one of these!) to do the transfer, but read previous advice.

Sorry I'm so slow at this stuff. But I now understand what you are saying. I don't need an additional/available USB port on the computer for the HD, if I understand you correctly. The music is already on the computer. I just need to connect the computer and Nucleus. I can set the HD aside. At least that's one way to do it. Thank you for your patience.

Exactly. You have two ways of doing this.

1. Connecting the Nucleus to your computer, OR
2. Connecting the Nucleus to the external hard drive.

After you choose one of the above, in Roon, you need to go to settings and under Storage, select the folder where the files reside.

If you have enough room on the hard drive within your Nucleus then copy the files from your computer to the Nucleus and you are done. No need to worry about connecting anything else. I assume you did something similar with whatever music you already have on your Roon Nucleus :).
