Need some advice on where to start troubleshooting: my ARC REF6SE and SVS sub have started to misbehave. About a second after taking the ARC off “mute” I get a very loud pop (low frequency) through my subwoofer which I am running from one of the ARC’s line level outputs. I run balanced to my amplifier.

The pop is only to the sub and seems to be volume dependent — after the mute is off it seems to be louder if the volume is set to 15 versus 10.

This set up has been working just fine for 6 months.

Ideas?

Thank you for your help

Frank

I have the Ref 6 and the Ref 75 and a pair of subs. I run my subs SE from a pair of the SE main outputs on the Ref 6. The rest of my system is balanced. It's interesting that your system was trouble free for the first 6 months and now you have the popping issue when you unmute your Ref 6SE. Are you running a single sub or a pair of subs? If the popping noise only occurs through your sub(s) and not your main speakers, it's probably an issue with your sub(s).

I had the same problem, but for a very long time on an active system, unfortunately what the problem is, I never figured out, but the speakers worked properly, which means most likely in the board

Do you have a meter or scope ? Or any other sun for testing? If you have a meter, run a test on the input cable going to your sub, if it’s the receiver, you will see the volts jump like crazy when you run the test

I think it's static related. I remember back in the day using subs and only noticing the pops in the winter when the furnace is running all day. obviously wouldn't apply under other conditions.

Thanks for the reply. Just using one sub. I usually power up amp and pre amp at same time. I just tried powering on amp then pre amp and did not get the pop. Sill not sure why it’s just now become a problem. Maybe static related as mentioned in following posts? I’m in Ohio. Quite dry right now.

You may be right. I’m in Ohio and the air is quite dry.

You should always turn on the preamp first and the amp last. When you are powering down the system, mute the preamp, turn off the power amp and then your preamp last.

Not sure that this is the issue here. Sounds as if the OP has been following the same procedure and is now encountering the Pops.

Agree that’s conventional wisdom. I usually turn everything in at once without issue. The sub “pop” is new.

Right — had been powering everything on at once. Amp warms up, then preamps click on after a minute or two. Never had the issue until today.

SVS has a pretty strong warranty program and a reputation for good customer support. With a sub that new, it's certainly worth the time to contact them directly and see if they have suggestions. They may just ship you a replacement depending on what the issue is.

Great service. I just sent them an email.

Here’s a good story: after having the sub a couple of months I saw that I had a credit on my credit card from SVS for $500. No idea what that was for. I contacted SVS letting them know I think they had made a mistake.

No, the price of the sub I bought two months earlier had been reduced and they wanted to give me the benefit of that pricing. They has sent me an email to let me know which I had missed.

Also — fantastic web site purchase process. I got this behemoth delivered to my doorstep in two days.

Shout out to SVS

I didn’t say it was the issue. I was commenting on him saying he turned his amp on first.

I'll be curious to know what the issue ended up being, too. I've been running a SVS PB-13 Ultra with Pass Labs electronics now for several years. I also live in Ohio and so I also live with the dry air of the winter time. Never had any kind of turn-on pop when the sub kicks in. To be fair, I do leave my pre-amp and power amp on 24/7, but I do mute frequently when I am not actively listening and the sub does go to "sleep" after a few minutes of inactivity.
