I've been owned a number of headphones through the years all the way back to my Koss Pro4 AA in the 70's, as well as several headphone amplifiers. By and large they have all been decent and enjoyable. My current headphone rig is the Sennheiser HD800 with the Sennheiser CH800S balanced cable. The headphone amplifier is the Sennheiser HDVA 600 that is fed with the Wyred 4 Sound DAC 2 which is fed from an Oppo BDP-83 used as a transport, a Sony Vaio notebook and desktop computer via USB. This setup replaced a Sennheiser HD600 and Musical Fidelity X-Can V8P headphone amp. The new HD800/HDVA 600/Wyred 4 Sound DAC 2/Oppo BDP-83 system has been quite a step up over everything else I have owned. The rig is set up at my office desk and I enjoy listening to music while spending time on the forums, reading my daily news sites, and responding to email. I am very pleased with the performance of this setup. It's the best I've ever owned.

Nice! I borrowed a pair of 800's and found them very comfortable and sonically excellent.

Mike.......You are correct, they are exceptionally comfortable to wear. I often have them on for three or four hours at a time and forget they are even there. The sound is amazingly clean with a full spectrum presentation. I have relatively big ears (All the better to hear with, my dear) and the HD800's are large enough to fit completely over my ears and then some. The new Sennheiser HDVA 600 amp is a serious performer, too.

When you purchase the HD800 and register your serial number with the factory in Germany, Sennheiser sends you the measured response curve of your headphone. This is the measured response for my HD800.

Nice setup! I love the sound of the HD800.
Providing you with the response curve after you register is a real nice touch.

Very cool. Been thinking about an office headphone system lately while I get orgnaised and wait for some new furniture to get built for it. The HD800 + HDVA600 is a serious contender but so is the new Oppo HA-1 headphone amp with built in DAC plus PM-1 Planar Magnetic Headphones.

I do love the Sennheiser brand and we fly with them all of the time. Speaking of Sennheiser 70th Anniversary...There should be some exciting new products coming soon including evolutionary headphone technology. There was the formidible and beautiful Orpheus. Now rumor has it "Apollo" will be available upon application. I dont think my cheque book has that many numbers in it for a limited edition headphone amplifier....but perhaps someone here will be lucky enough to own a set. :)

Dan...where did you get the bananna/headphone hanger. That's really kewl. BTW: I really like the tour of your audio gear you have shared. You're really got great stuff -- and so very well organized!

Steve.......The combination of the Sennheiser HD800 and the Sennheiser HDVA 600 is sublime. As I understand it, during the development of the HD800 headphone Sennheiser need a headphone amplifier that was a true challenge for the headphone. They didn't find one that met their criteria so they manufactured one. Once they were satisfied with the design and performance of the HD800 their engineers decided to offer their prototype headphone amp as the HDVA 600. In addition, they made the decision to also offer the same amp with an included high quality Burr-Brown DAC with four digital inputs, AES/EBU, coaxial, optical, and USB, the Sennheiser HDVD 800. All digital inputs accept signals up to 24Bit/192kHz.

The HD800, the Sennheiser headphone cables, and both amplifiers (HDVA 600 and HDVD 800) are manufactured at Sennheiser headquarters in Germany. These are exceptional products.

Now you did it!! You're getting sound that no speaker can deliver. All other systems will seem like garbage.

Killer headphone set-up Dan!

Not too long ago I purchased one of the Woo Audio headphone stands and it is of very high quality and not unreasonably priced.

Buddy.......Thanks for the tip. I like the one for the single headphone. I will check into this.

Nice headphones plenty of threads on heafi about them. They are true regency headphone as is the amp. The dac is ok and a bit thin even if used with my ref server. But it does show the magic details just not the note thickness to keep me involved. They are about 90 percent of heat my stax 009 rig is on my woo Wes or bhse. That's pretty Damn close for about a third of the price. Now they aslo song well on my woo wa5. And now my head dac too and of rolls tubes giving new horizons to look for. The dual stup bares Al,that there is with any dsc used so bad stuff need not apply as it will be asked to leave quickly. Some feel the hd800 is too top heavy or Brite. I feel it's fantastic when fed the good stuff from ago chain. There is evaluating modes that can tame it. But anytime I heard them it took the air out and ruined the headphones sound. Now my he6 gives or a good run for the money and does beat them in an overall speaker type sound meaning longer nite decay and weight while still giving the hyper details of the duo. But you need a big amp. Cavellas amps I have not heard but I do know someone I trust who claims they are very good too.
Al
