I have an opportunity to buy a used pair of Bang & Olufsen Beolab 5 speakers. I consider placing them in the family room within a second system. Beolab 5 was B&O's top of the line speaker a few years ago, it is no longer in production. I am interested in them because I always fancy their sleek design, but I did not have chance for a proper audition, the seller had them connected to his AV system and he could only play music from some TV program, the sound was not impressive to say the least. I know many audiophiles consider B & O a lifestyle brand, not the best in sound, however, this model was technical advanced for its time, it is active, it has acoustic lens tweeters, microphone and room adjustment, etc., and I read some good reviews for it online, but what is the chance would you ever read really bad professional review for a product? I do not have a feel what those speakers are capable of. I am here seeking opinion from the forum memebers, are they any good? And would you spend between $6000-$8000 for a pair of them?
By the way, if I get them I would use my Linn Klimax DS streamer as source and play flac files, it should be better than the original B&O player. And because they are active, no need for other new equipment or fancy cables, which is a plus. On the other hand, not much options for tuning its sound. I am not looking for the ultimate sound, but I would expect them to be musical, so my family can enjoy music in the family room.
