Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum

The Roger's marketing seems a bit over the top for me, plus how do they get 112 watts in class A out of two KT150's, probably cause it's not class A!

5) Your Diapason speakers are rated at 91dB sensitivity @ 1w/1m and has a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, which suggests on the surface that they should work fine with a tube amp but there is a drop in the impedance curve to 3.4 ohms at 200Hz (upper range of midbass frequencies) so you would still want to have a capable amp with sufficient current delivery via the 4ohm taps to make sure there is not a hesitancy or a diminution at 200Hz where a lot of what we hear as bass information is really midbass info. To see what instruments lie in this region, refer to the chart below:

6) One final option to consider is a hybrid integrated amp, with tubes placed in the preamp stage or the input stages of the power amp and a SS output stage, which should give you some tube flavoring without the hassles of dealing with changing out output tubes every few thousand hours and biasing them etc...One option that comes to mind that I think is an excellent hybrid integrated amp that is also from Italy (like your Diapasons) and that is visually very striking (some people love it and others not so much) is the Pathos Logos (now in mk II version). I have heard the Mk I version which a friend used to own with his Focal speakers and it was a match made in heaven. Here's a pic of the Pathos Logos in case you are interested (but remember there are many such designs including an option that has been talked about here a lot, the Musical Fidelity Nuvista 800 integrates amp):

The Pathos has been on my short list for a while as well as the speakers recently. Gorgeous together!

Brian there is a Pathos TT on audiogon for $1900 , 7 years old with 4 days left ( the guy is downsizing). I've heard this integrated in Ga and it has that Pathos character somewhere between the Classic MkIII and the Logos. I would buy it but its to big for my rack.

I am planning to add a Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum tube integrated to my collection. I know that it has an excellent reputation for superb value at $2300. Do any of you have anything critical to say about the amp or its limitations? If I were to spend twice as much (say $5,000), is there a brand or model that would offer substantially greater performance and still offer excellent value? If so, please elaborate. THanks!

I had one a few years back, and to be honest, it was one of the biggest audio disappointments I've ever had. On the plus side, it sounded great when it was working, but I had issues with one channel cutting out all the time that even multiple (and expensive visits) to my trusted tube tech couldn't figure out. On top of that, there was a very obvious channel imbalance between left and right.

I ended up selling it "as-is" at a huge loss out of frustration. Hopefully you have better luck!

Thanks CMalak for taking the time to offer so detailed a response. I will certainly look into each of the candidates you mentioned. Btw, I never planned to buy the Rogers product sight unseen, sound unheard. I'm going to take my time and do my research for sure. Separates are also a definite possibility. The Macintosh MC275 50th LE caught my attention. I wonder how it would pair with Diapasons.

Glad to hear it and I hope I was of some help. Enjoy the demo/research stage, I find sometimes that's half the fun and you learn a lot about your preferences and what to listen for when you go through that process.

As for the MC275, I know a few folks here (Paul, Joe and a few orhers) have or have had that amp in their systems so I will let the Mac guys chime in here as I am of no help on that front.

So I have come full circle in my search for a suitable tube amp to bring into my system. I've ordered the Rogue Stereo 100. Everyone experienced who I trust continues to praise the Rogue products. The 100 is more refined than the Cronus, and has a better fit and finish. I will likely add the new Rogue RP-5 preamp soon. My dealer (a shark) wants to give it a close listen before he endorses it. So initially I'll control it with a Blue Circle 21.1 tube line-stage.

Congrats! Post pics when you get it.

Congrats . I know your Dealer and its true, he's a Shark alright....

So yesterday was a very exciting day for me. My dealer (an active Shark) delivered the Rogue 100 Stereo Amp to my home. Out went the Hegel H80 solid state integrated, in went the Rogue in partnership with a Blue Circle tube preamp. Let me tell you it was worth the wait to experience the massive upgrade in sound. The sound stage is dramatically larger than the Hegel's. Finally I can experience the legendary tube holographic imaging. The Diapason speakers are loving the new amplification. The listening room just seems enchanted right now. I should have mentioned that my dealer did throw a ringer into the mix by also installing for demo an Auralic Vega DAC and leaving some DSD files to sample. I cannot fault his technique, since I will be loathe to part with the Vega on the scheduled pick up date. Sooner or later I will unplug it to hear what the Rogue / Blue Circle / Diapason combo sounds like with an ordinary Peachtree DAC. I'm pretty sure that if it were not for high-end audio, my dealer could have flourished in the marketing of any number of addictive goods.

First - I'm glad your dealer is a member of AS. ALL dealers are welcome and strongly encouraged to participate. Second, glad the Rogue gear is sounding great! Keep us posted.

Mike, how do we get a Rogue Audio manufacturer forum added to Audio Shark?

Glad a Rogue forum was established..... Very low traffic there though.
