Review - Audience ClairAudient 1+1 v3 speakers

I received my two pairs of Audience ClairAudient 1+1 v2+ back with the v3 upgrades. I have been able to track the upgrades since I sent originals in for V2+ upgrades. I thought that upgrade was big but this second upgrade is phenomenally bigger. This tiny speaker has always been a “blow my mind” component with how crazy good it is - coherent as the Magico and Raidho speakers I have had in my system. Maybe even more coherent!

Thanks for the review...

Its July 10,2019. My speakers are being shipped to Audience for the V3 upgrade. They were already V2+ modded.

If these speakers work for your taste in your system its hard to consider anything else. I can enjoy other speakers. But, if Audience's design goal is in agreement with your audio DNA? Its a profound revelation to behold.

Hello,

I have the Audience 1+1 v2 OC upgrade and am loving the speakers so far. I'm thinking of getting the v4 upgrade, have any of you received it? What do you guys think?

The 1+1 can only be upgraded to v3 as far as I know. The v4 is for The One, the smaller model.

I just had an email exchange with Audience and they said: "The cost to upgrade your speakers to V4 is $500 plus return shipping. Improvements from your speakers to V4 include:

-Implementation of improved voice coil technology which provides faster rise time and greater control of the driver.

-The Loudspeaker internal wiring includes the metallurgic improvements represented in the new Audience flagship frontRow cables wiring.

-Greater Resolution and quieter background resulting in a dramatically more palpable and tonally rich presentation.

-Dynamics and sound staging are improved.

-Improved passive radiators.

-Top of the line Eichmann ultra-low mass pure copper binding posts."

I'm considering getting it but I live abroad and sending it to be upgraded would cost me even more. Has anyone heard the new upgrade?

I checked on Audience website and came up empty: no mention of any upgrade for the 1+1 v3. However the description of the v3 upgrade reads very similar to what you quoted. Here it is:

‘The improvements of the V3 loudspeakers are very significant resulting from the implementation of improved voice coil technology. The V3 voice coil technology provides faster rise time and greater control of the driver. Additionally, the V3 loudspeaker internal wiring includes the metallurgic improvements represented in the new Audience flagship frontRow cables wiring. The end result of these improvements is not subtle. The V3 loudspeakers are notably better in just about every aspect. The resolution is greater and the background is quieter resulting in a dramatically more palpable and tonally rich presentation.’

By the way, my v3 have these new bidding posts that was referred to in your quote.

They just updated the website again now, the v4 upgrade is now there. I wonder if anyone here has got the upgrade, if anyone has, it would be great if you could let us know what you think of the upgrade.

It would be helpful if you simply gave a link to what you read... There is no mention of the 1+1 V4 on the Audience page. I saw one ad with a retailer claiming the V4, but the changes were identical to what the V3 achieved.

I emailed Audience and got this answer from them:

As of July, 2021 The 1+1 loudspeakers are available in Version 4 (V4). The improvements of the V4 loudspeakers are very significant resulting from the implementation of improved passive radiators and top of the line Eichmann ultra low mass pure copper binding posts.

Previous versions of The 1+1 can be upgraded for the following:

$1,375: 1+1 --> 1+1 V4
$875: 1+1 V2 --> 1+1 V4
$500: 1+1 V2+ OC --> 1+1 V4
$320: 1+1 V3 --> 1+1 V4

So this is correct, there is a V4. The website is not updated.

Thanks..

Looks like the biggest change would be found with the new passive radiators...

Apparently.. the drivers themselves have not been changed if you have the V3.

I might sit this one out if it is just for the passive radiators. That would probably help the bass. In my system, the 1+1s don’t handle any bass at all. I have two pairs of subs for that duty. I don’t have any issue with the bidding posts either. I can be convinced though, so I will wait for the reviews and comments before taking the dive. This would be the least expensive upgrade so far.

I thought that upgrade was big but this second upgrade is phenomenally bigger. This tiny speaker has always been a “blow my mind” component with how crazy good it is - coherent as the Magico and Raidho speakers I have had in my system. Maybe even more coherent!

With this new upgrade the most immediate thing I noticed was how these speakers woke up, came alive, bristle with energy and dynamics. Almost like they are active / self powered so every cell of every driver is stomping its hoof to get going. While retaining the single voice, refined, transparent delicacy of before, now it feels like the dynamics and energy of the speaker has tripled, without taking anything away.

I also noticed there is more extension especially in the lower registers. Combined with the increase in dynamics the “slam” factor has increased while the “musical” natural sound has not been lost. These are so revealing without being strident in the least. In fact, I often think it must be the absence of a crossover that allows such a coherent accurate picture to be painted and to be so listenable without fatigue. As if my ears and brains are not having to struggle with artificial stitching together of frequencies that other speakers have to do when handing off different frequencies to different drivers.

I’ve owned a lot of bookshelf speakers (KEF LS50, Dynaudios, etc). They all pale in comparison to the ClairAudient 1+1 - as witnessed by the fact those others are sold or are packed away sitting in a closet. The beauty of the 1+1 is it competes with my $8,000 Raidho XT-1 but is more versatile. It can be my best ever computer audio speaker. It can be my best ever L/R/C home theater speakers (superb pairing with REL subs that can keep up and blend in) - I have had 3-4 more expensive center channel speakers and I can’t go back to them because the human voice and clarity of center channel information is perfection through the 1+1. Especially now with the V3 upgrade. I know that is overkill for HT in most systems. But I would put my HT with the 1+1s up against any cost no object home theater. And the footprint of the speakers is perfect for that application. These little gems will never leave my home and will only have more 1+1s join the family over time.

PS, I paid full retail cost for the upgrades

FYI I am getting ready to send these in for upgrade to v5. I’m retired so watching where I spend my $ but I keep going back to these speakers and to Audience cabling. Price to value ratio is extremely good and I appreciate their practical footprint and aesthetics. Not to mention John M and Joe F and others @ Audience are some of the nicest people in this industry. PS I am paying full retail for the upgrades so this post is not tied to any discounts etc. PSS I will be using two pairs of these in a smallish media room as front (audio and HT) L/R and as center channel. This is best cohesive sound I’ve had in a HT / Audio setup.

Being pedantic: PPS

Just so happens his new post got to me at a perfect time.

Have now contacted John McDonald and he had Joe Flatt gave me my RMA.

It was perfect timing in various ways for me to consider such an upgrade.....

How are your impressions? Is this upgrade more significant than the V3 upgrade? Thanks.

I did not go through with it. My internet provider AT&T mandated that I switch from DSL to their new fiber. They provided a new and better modem. No more long runs of copper cable to pick up RFI and EMI. The sound improved so much I just decided against another upgrade.

I also switched the Modem wifi off which seemed to quiet down some more noise on the motherboard, and only use an audiophile Ethernet cable from the modem to the DAC.

Enjoying what I am hearing now.
