I’ve test the Ref 6 by using three different power-amp yesterday at ARC’s distributor showroom

McIntosh MC452
Accuphase A-70
ARC Ref 75 SE

Sourcing: Accuphase DP-720
Speaker: Focal JM Lab Scala V2 Utopia

Ref 6 + McIntosh MC452:
Very thick sound, a lot of meat and muscle, good dynamic, but the figure seem to be a little bit fat in my ear.

Ref 6 + Accuphase A-70:
Less density and thickness than Ref 6 + MC-452, seem like lack of energy, I don’t spend too much time to test this combo. I guess A-70 does not have enough power to drive JM Lab Utopia, perhaps A-200 will do much better job.

Ref 6 + Ref 75 SE:
Very musical, fast, not as much meat as MC-452, just at the right thickness. However, MC-452 has slightly better dynamic. It sound so beautiful, all I need to do is just to close my eye and listen to music. In overall, it sound better than MC-452 and A-70 in my opinion. I was surprise about this because I never listen to ARC Ref combo before, and many people told me how good to use Tube pre-amp + SS power-amp. And tube amp sound slow….but now it change my mind. And I also wonder Ref 75 SE has such good power to drive Focal JM Lab Scala V2 Utopia. I’m thinking if it sound even better to use Ref 150

Thank you for your thoughts. ARC preamps with ARC amps is amazing. Really the only way to go in my opinion.

I have to argue a bit with that statement Joe. They're not too bad with Pass Labs amps either and I've had both ARC and Pass amps in my system.

Never heard an ARC preamp and Pass amp. That's something that I need to do sometime. I stand corrected :D

The ARC REF6 preamp also sounds terrific with Aesthetix Atlas Signature mono amps. All voltage gain handled with tubes between the preamp and amps. With the REF6 preamp, minimum input impedance on the amp(s) should be 20K ohms according to ARC.

Best,
Ken

Thanks Ken. Great to know.

Have anybody tried the Audio Research Reference 6 with Pass Labs power Amplifer? XP30 is about the same price as the Reference 6. Maybe if I prefer tube/ organic sound I can better go for ARC?! I have XA 160.5 Amplifers.

I owned the XP-30 with the XA-100.5 and XA-100.8. It is a wonderful pairing with the XP-30 providing as organic a sound as any solid state preamp I've listened to. You also get great detail, dynamics and an ultra low noise floor.

I ask it because I can get the reference 6 , 2 months old at good price. And XP-30 is the same. Only thing is that I can not get the Reference 6 for listening in my system. And XP-30 I can.
So I thinking of get listening session net week of xp30 and decide if I'm going to get the Reference 6 or not.

Have anyone compare Pass XP30 to let's say ARC Reference 5SE with combination of Pass Xa point 5 AMP?

Several months ago I owned 2 XP-30's. Fantastic preamp. I sold both and replaced one with a Pass XS preamp. The other I replaced with an ARC Ref 6. The Pass XS is the ultimate in my opinion. It simply outperforms the XP-30 but it should! The XP-30 is not far behind...not at all. The Ref 6 is amazing. Every day I am more and more impressed. Ref 6 is truly special. It's a tough choice between the XP-30 and the Ref 6. But... For me I'd go with the Ref 6. Hope this helps and congratulations...

I went from pass x0.2 and xp 20 to a ref 5se prior. Amps were x350.5 and dagostino momentum stereo. The arc gave a more holographic presentation and a tad more musical to my ears

Excellent post. If I decide to tube my system, the REF6 will be in.

Thanks. FYI - for those of you who are in the NJ area, Audio Connection is having an event on May 21st... Vandersteen paired with ARC...if I didn't have something planned with the Lampizator guys that same day I'd definitely make the effort to attend...would love to hear this combination!

Hi,

you use a Pass amoli abd too a Lampi Dac and wih the pre Xp30 or Xs pre you find thath the ARC ref6 is better vs the "combo full Passlabs"???

wow...I had the REF5se and FOR MY TASTE was a very bad preampli. I have buyed the REF5se iwithout any test at home.....only read review and opinio from freind..... -> SOLD AFTER 6 months!!!

I use Pass ampli. if you have a Lampi DAC (= tube DAC) and tooo the REF6 are you so "in heaven"????

I dont willl have a REF6 -> or a ARC product no more in my life!

Xp30 - XA monos - Lampi tube Dac .....cd player and a Lumin S1....what else?????

sorry but I find ARC really no more a good gear.....ARC in the past was good but now please!

I go receive a Lapi lite7 in test and i'm sure that will be superb with a extern preamli....and sure not a tube pre!

thank you

Hi. I'm not sure you fully were able to comprehend my last post. Sorry if it has caused any confusion. I will try to simply the communication:

* My Pass XS preamplifier is in a class all its own. It is top notch. I enjoy it immensely and have no plans at this time to replace it with anything else at any price.

* The Pass XP-30 units I owned also performed very well and if they were all I had in the preamp department I'd still be blessed to have such fine gear. Remember the XP-30 is still a top rated preamplifier. The Pass XS clearly outperforms them in every regard but one would expect this to be the case.

* The ARC Ref 6 is my first piece of ARC equipment. To me, it's performance is strikingly good! I absolutely love the sound and it's functionality is very nice. I also have no plans to sell it. Like the Pass it exudes quality, sounds spectacular and doesn't disappoint. I personally would chose a Ref 6 over an XP-30 in many instances, but would not chose it over the XS - the XS still reigns.

* My Lampizator is a Golden Gate fully balanced and built by Lukasz. This too is in a class all its own. I have heard so many DACs and nothing to me does what Lampizator does - captures and conveys the soul in the music. You don't listen to music with a Lampizator, you feel it. Paired with my Pass XS preamp, well... in a word... BLISS.

Sorry your experience with ARC gear has not been positive. I simply cannot relate.

I'm a Pass fan. Pass sound amazing . much better as other brand much more expensive.-> Pass have a price/performance like not others!

Xs preampli is sure stunning!!!! sorry I understand that the REF6 was better from Pass pre !!!

Lampli from Pawel are the great DAC available (well with Pass pre&ampli is a very jewel!) I dont will a Dac with volume control :Pawel say me that if you use a "extern" preampli purchase a DAC with volume controle is not the right way-> preampli and DAC (of xourse xlr) and ampli is reallly cool in sound! for europa Pawel have a version called "siebner" in our catalog/product. He say me that is very very similar at the golden gate....more simply -> simplicity on the "gears" give the best sound(DAC without volume controll work better vs a DAC with volume controll plus extern preampli...
anyway Totaldaxc or others dont have any possibilty vs lampi Dac!

Xs pre is too expensive for me! in europa is around 55k. ..the Xp30 is TOP.

I dont like ARC. a lot of people have pass (or other SS ampli with ARC preampli and he say that is a amazing combo....for me not is so....MY PESONAL TASTE. in place from a REF i go with the XP30 sure 100%.....

I'm happy that you have a very great sound with Pass and Lampi!!

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, Pass makes great product - I am a big fan of the XS and XP-30. But also love the Ref 6. To me the Ref 6 does not sound "tubey". It is dynamic and vibrant. Nice sound.

The Lampizator you reference "siebner" is made exclusively for the German market. It's a special piece but here in the USA we fortunate to have all the models available that we do. Balanced Golden Gate reigns...King in my book. ;-)

Thank you again and best of luck to you in your search for great sound...

Hi LDV,

Excellent post! My experience with the XP-30 and Ref 6 echo yours. I owned the XP-30 with the XA-100.5 and XA-100.8 and it is an outstanding preamp. Probably the most organic sounding solid state preamp I have heard. Also tremendous detail, nuance, dynamics and a low noise floor. But I have done a lengthy audition of the Ref 6 with the Aesthetix Atlas Signature monoblocks and Vandersteen 7 MkII and I agree with you that I prefer it over the XP-30. The Ref 6's midrange body, dimension, soundstage and dynamics put it a notch above the XP-30 in my book. It is an incredible component for the money. No need to buy a Ref 10 anymore in my opinion, it is that good!

Best,
Ken
