New D3's....first impressions

Yesterday evening I found out why I was getting "too much" bass with the D3's. It was not a lack of control, it was just too much bass in the lower mid bass region. I had two gold "resonators" on the floor of my room. I placed them there when using the D1's. They worked incredibly well with the D1's, but they were over emphasizing the bass with the D3's. As soon as I removed the resonators the bass fell into place. I still have 10 resonators in my room, but the two gold resonators on the floor were "extra" to assist the D1's in the lower bass department.

I really should not be making any type of D3 performance statements until 1) the speakers are broken in and 2) until I make sure that I have my room set up properly.

The speakers now have 50 hours on them, I will give an update once I get to the 250 mark, but even now they are sounding incredible to me, with EITHER SS or the Absolare electronics.

I agree Bob. I'm at 110 hours now and the bass has transformed in such a profound way - I wouldn't have believed it (unless I heard fully broken in D3's before). I also find that playing vinyl (besides sounding great) can really help break in those woofers because of the rapid and exaggerated vibration of the woofers that vinyl causes. A steady diet of vinyl is in order - oh the torture! LOL.

What makes these speakers outstanding is the way you can put on a average sounding CD (listening to an old Paul Simon CD now) and I'm stunned at how good it sounds. The intro of "50 ways to leave your lover" sounds so good!

My speakers are 7 feet, 2 inches from the back wall and 12 inches from the side wall (measured from the front of the speaker). They are toed in with tweeters pointing just outside my shoulders. That being said, I put away the measuring tape and when through my setup routine and let the room decide placement. As a result, the right speaker is toed in ever so slightly more than the left.

Hey mike how far apart are your speakers? And how far is your listening spot from them??
Just curious

Just measured with the laser. 11.795 feet apart measured tweeter to tweeter. My right ear is 9.157 feet from the right tweeter. My left ear is 9.356 feet from the left tweeter. I have a much bigger opening over my right shoulder, then over my left shoulder - which likely accounts for the right speaker being a titch closer. I was this way with my Strads too (which I felt I had got dialed in better than any speaker I've ever owned).

Btw, if anyone has any special requests for ANYTHING (Geisha girls etc:exciting: OR if anyone has any ideas about the 10-1 visit, just please don't be shy. It's all your visit, if there is anything that would make it more enjoyable let's do it or at least discuss doing it. I have no sacred cows with anything, if you want to bring any equipment, music, whatever, it's all cool.

Also. if anyone gets into the city on the night of the 30th, or anytime that week, I will be available at the studio.....just give me a head's up and come on over for a visit and a listen.

My friend is over on Lexington , I was going to go stay with him the night before but he is out of town that whole week. Be kinda weird me walking down the street with my snappers under my arms. Lol. Even though I'd love to hear if they drive the raidhos well.
I would really love to bring my hovland with the mc step up to see how it matches up to all that sweet gear. See of I need a pre in the future or mine will do well with gear many times its price.

Steve, like I said bring whatever you want, like I said me casa su casa. Get a little red wagon for the snappers, you will look totally normal in NYC with a wagon and the snappers;0

From my familiarity with the Hovland gear, I think it would fit in with any system at any price, whether you like the overall chemistry match with what you connect it to would be your personal liking or not, but I think it's top notch gear.

I will be bringing my demo CD's. Keeping the songs constant between demos is key IMO.

Awesome that preamp has put the highs on another level for me and I'd be scared to change and lose any of that. Thx
