Lumin Review

I agree Bob. I can't speak to the folks at Linn, but they've been doing it a long long time and I'm sure they are great. I can tell you the folks at Lumin are passionate audiophiles. I wish I could share some things they've told me and pictures they've showed me in confidence, but let's just say, they are really passionate about audio and want the Lumin to be the most musically sounding digital source you've ever heard.....because they want it to be that way for their own use.

These guys sound like people I want to do business with...

Did you invite them to the forum, Mike?

Quick update: the very slight tape hiss was caused by having the Lumin app volume at 100. At 99, it's dead silent. I will notify Lumin of my findings.

Mike, do you use variable volume control on the app? For pure audiophiles that is like cursing in church!
OK I'll admit it, I do it as well:lol: Because it is so darn practical on the Lumin app. Now on the Linn Akurate I'll have to bring back the maximum volume to 80% when using variable volume control. I even brought mine back to 78% as I think only until that point I feel I keep the purity of the sound.
Oh if the Audionet people would know that I am not solely using their fantastic app with volume control on the DNP... :skeptical:

Anyhow probably for the Lumin you'll have a similar setting where you can disable the internal volume control and thus have the pure signal to the amp. Here is how it looks on the Linn Konfig program:

I don't use the variable volume control. The Lumin best practices guide suggests leaving it at 100%. I emailed Lumin and my contact emailed right back. They are aware of the problem now and are fixing it. They said right after Christmas a firmware update will be coming that fixes it. Bravo!

It's really not a big deal. I'm picking at the littlest thing. I'm sure not many people are listening with their ear next to the tweeter! :)

. I have hundreds and hundreds of SACD's converted to DSD. While doing the review, I thought to myself "I can't go down the non-DSD streamer route, I have too many DSD files I listen to on a regular basis." If you don't give two hoots about DSD, then definitely do some comparisons between the Lumin and the Linn (or others). Both are excellent.

Mike, pardon my ignorance, but how did you convert SACDs? I am only aware of the ps3 trick to copy sacd.

Mike, I've been posting on both of your Lumin threads, but very curious how the Classe CP800 compared to the Lumin?

I sold the CP800 and never compared it head to head with the Lumin, but from memory, the Lumin sounds much more analog like. The Lumin Network Music Player betters every DAC I've had in my system by a large margin. If you are a detail, resolution freak - then you may prefer a Meitner or DAC2X. If you love fatigue free analog like listening, then the Lumin is it.

Mike, I finally got time to read this thread in it's entirety, bout time you did something useful :), especially around here :D. Good read & enjoyed your thoughts & comparisons of easily relatable material. I just may have to do a comparo between the Aurender 10 & the Lumin. Thanks for the pleasure of the read.

Jeff, I've compared the CP 800 using my Oppo as a transport to my Linn Akurate DS. It was very, very, close. The Linn edged it out. But the CP 800 sounds fantastic, and if they ever deliver on the new updated board with streaming capabilities , it might be all anyone could want.

You're very welcome Kev!

Bump...in case anyone missed my original review on the Lumin (revert back to page one on this thread).

Hi Mike,

I just read through your review (thank you for posting it). I'm curious which unit this was (the A1 or the S1)? If it's the A1, how does the S1 compare as it's their latest and greatest?

Thank you! [emoji6]

It's the Lumin A1. When I did the review, there was only one Lumin. Ironically, this is the exact same unit I'm using today.

The newer S1 is also excellent - but whether you go A1 or S1 is entirely system dependent. I have both and both are excellent. S1 is sweet, with tighter bass and less bass (so better for bass heavy speakers like Raidho). A1 is very analog sounding - warts and all. S1 does DSD and Double DSD. A1 does DSD.

Mike......I don't know how I missed your Lumin review until today. This is an excellent and well written review. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I'm glad you linked to it in your most recent Lumin A1 thread or I might not have ever seen it.
