Hi guys, I have been using the D2 for close to a year now. I am planning to do upgrade to have a better sound quality. As some people suggest me to put an external DAC to a D2 such as delta sigma or R2R type. I agree that the D2 doesn’t sound too analogue and a little thin (probably due to Wolfsen Dac). Therefore I have two options, one is find a good high end DAC to pair up with the D2 to make the sound more analogue. Or I go straight to T2 instead as many of you said T2 sounds much better than D2.

Has anyone here using D2 with external DAC can provide me some comments on the sound quality? And which DAC will be a good match with D2? I would like to get some advices on whether buy a good DAC or go for T2 is better. I mostly listen to Jazz, male and female vocal, classical once in awhile though. My budget to spend is around US4000

Many thanks

Some frined of mine had D2 for a coulpe of months and now some weeks ago he purchased T2... for me it is the best option.

Good Luck!!!!

If the D2 can be used with an external DAC, I can highly recommend the MHDT ORCHID DAC. IT’S a tube based ( used as a buffer), R2R DAC. VERY smooth and “ organic” sounding, without sacrificing to much detail, plus has a very nice pathway for various “ Mods” ( many on line discussions of various mods, to enhance it’s sound).
Cheers....

Cool, thanks for the advice. How did your friend like it so far? Is the SQ much better?

Well it is difficult to explain sound differences.. but anyway I will try to do my best to answer.

For me the difference/improvement between Lumin D2 and T2 is as follows...:

Trebble --> more crystalline
Bass --> more controled and tight
Voices --> more present/advanced

He uses electronic Power + Pre --> VINCENT
Speakers --> Tannoy Cheviot

On the other hand in my system I have also tried the D2 and then I had the possibility to buy X1 it was also a big improvement too.

I have no tried in my system the difference between X1 and T2 but I´m pretty sure that after the quarantine we will try with me friends.

Here in Buenos Aires we are a group of 6 audiophile friends and we own U1 mini, D2, A1, T2 and X1

Hope I can help you with my brief explanations and please do note hesitate to contact me should you have any comment or need further information.

Best Regards;

Thanks for your advice! I had done some research on it and it looks pretty decent, small and compact DAC. However, the downside in my case would be the lack of balanced input. Otherwise I will put it on my wish list.

If you are getting the X1, it’s top of the line among others series. I have never do audition on the X1, I can imagine the SQ must be superb.
There is another option which is get the U1 mini and replace it with D2, and then get a separate DAC to hook up with the mini instead of getting the standalone T2. On the other hand, it will give me more option to choose which DAC I like the most.

Sell or trade in the D2 for the Lumin T2....a big jump in sound quality: dynamics, detail, soundstaging and especially a "natural" presentation.....great top to bottom tonal balance. The T2 would also allow you to plug in an outboard USB DAC if you ever felt the need.

The T2 would seem to be the obvious choice. But if you don't want to stay with Lumin, maybe the T+A DAC8 DSD or the Schiit Yggdrasil?

I tried a T2 in my hifi reseller auditorium
It is amazing
I listened to a X1 with Boston Acoustics installation, I thought I was in a concert
But perfection means dollars ...

Thanks guys. I have another thought that to get an U1 Mini and go get an external DAC. I am more towards to R2R but there way too many out there and so difficult to choose
