Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

... Recently I played the Bruckner Mass 3, which I had not listened to seriously. Very fine composition. I think I have read that Bruckner was very religious.

Larry

Of all the "great" composers I've found Bruckner the most difficult to appreciate -- I suppose it doesn't help that I'm not musically trained. I've got my head around Brahms, Mahler, and even Schumann to an extend but Bruckner I still find very tedious. Yes, Bruckner was a very devout Catholic.

Nevertheless I do have CDs of Bruckner's masses. This is the only version I have so can't really consider this a recommendation.

On high definition system able to handle 120 instruments in a very damped acoustics (Munich Philharmonie), the Celibidache EMI Bruckner set is a must, and in my opinion a better way to discover Bruckner than the usual suspects (Jochum, Wand, etc.)

Is this the set?

8 CD's with Symphonies 3-9 and Te Deum and Mass #3. Amazon has it for $80, and there are some other resellers for around $55. It looks like a reissue of an earlier EMI set (the current one is Warner's who ownes EMI Classical) which came in jewel cases - this one is in sleeves.

Thanks, Larry

It is the set, but Amazon UK has it for 19 GBP, just saying.

Great. I just ordered it from Amazon UK. I have to remember to check their prices- with no VAT to the US, the postage is usually lower than than the savings in VAT.

I hope you like it - but at least at 19GBP we limited the risks. 5, 6, 8 and 9 would be my favs in this boxset.

Thanks again. I do like the Goodall Ring and some Knappertsbusch (I have to go back and hear his Bruckner 5 again) - so Celibidache's slow tempi may be enlightening for me.

Re: Rotating now | And very relaxing ::

Last night I enjoyed ...

Allan Pettersson: Symphony No. 7 ~ Gert Albrecht / Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra

... a impassioned, angstful, and at times sad work.

Does anyone have additional recommendations for Pettersson works and performances?

His 10th Symphony is one of my favorites. I actually like all of them, but the longer ones, such as the 9th, can be something of an acquired taste. Since you have that one symphony on CPO, I'd go for this one, as they do a great job:

I also like his 2nd Violin Concerto:

And the String Concertos:

If you can play vinyl, this was a long time resident of the TAS Super Disc List. Caprice 1127.

Thanks for that suggestion. In fact I don't play vinyl any more; the last LP I bought was in about 1995. However I am intending to listen to more Pettersson.

mercury living presence cd box set v1

Anyone have this? If so, interested to hear your thoughts about the SQ of the releases. Thanks, Chris

Re: mercury living presence cd box set v1

I believe these are reissues of the releases that were remastered by Wilma Cozart, the producer at Mercury who did the original recordings with her husband Robert Fine. If so, they should be great and at a real bargain price. I have most all of them, bought as they came out in the 90's IIRC, but I paid around $9 each for them then. So at $2-3 a CD that is a steal. Almost all of them have about 1.5 records worth of music on them.

Chris, I didn't buy the Mercury box set but recently purchased the RCA and Decca box sets. I've been very happy with the quality overall and the musical selection is awesome. I will likely pick up the Mercury sets as well one day. These sets are bargains IMO.

Actually, in about an hour or so, my dear friend is the soloist playing Brahms Violin Concerto. I'm so confident of her performance, I bought her flowers.

That is one of great pieces of the violin concerto literature, one of the hardest also. Your friend must be very good. - Her name isn't Anne-Sophie is it?

Enthusiastic playing and quiet background!
