Does anyone know who makes a good cd transport(no dac)between $1000.00 and $2000.00. I've searched and the only one I've found so far is the Bel Canto cd3t which lists for $1499.00. It looks like a nice transport, but I'm not real fond of slot loaders.

Can anyone give me some suggestions??

Thanks in advance:peace:

Bob...do you mean a truly dedicated cd transport without an onboard DAC? Or would a CD player (with on board DAC) but also with digital outs be ok? Is this to feed the Rega DAC?

I do in fact mean a dedicated transport with no onboard dac. The transport would feed the Rega dac.

Bel Canto makes the CD-2 also which a friend has and loves. Dedicated transports are becoming very rare. One of next better units is made by Acoustic Arts but is between 3-4K.

I've thought about the Bel Canto cd-2 also. It is a top loader and you can actually see the disc spinning. Pretty cool I say.

My friend uses his with the Berkeley Alpha dsc. It sounds great.

CEC, French company, I know makes high-end transports but prolly not in your budget even used. You can try to find an older Esoteric transport used to fit your budget but just checked Agon and besides a current model P-05 in the $5K region, did not see much. Sounds like the Bel Canto is in the right zip code for what you're looking Bob.

Good luck.

Thanks Cyril I believe the Bel Canto cd3t is the one. There aren't many companies that make a dedicated transport.

Do people think its possible to find an old esoteric transport? I think you still can...just make sure to check laser assemblies, etc . Some say the old esoteric P07 or something from 14 years ago is still one of the best rbcd transports. How much is the old MArk Levinson 31.5 ref Transport? Probably about $1000...but Harmon does not provide service support anymore.

Hello. I've also been looking for a transport. A few things that come up are the remote and the output.

Some remotes do not have numbers for direct track access. You have to toggle thru fast-forward. Not so good with 20+ tracks.

Some outputs are BNC which requires the use of an adapter if you use an RCA cable and the DAC has RCA ins. Does anyone have any info on pros/cons of using a BNC female to RCA female adapter with an RCA cable?

Woo Audio makes a great looking top-loader. But no numbers on the remote and BNC out (site shows RCA). Simaudio Moon Neo 260D can be purchased without the DAC and be used as a dedicated transport.

I'm currently trying a Musical Fidelity CDT 1. If you can find a picture of the inside of the Bel Canto CDT 3, you'll notice that the slot mechanism is made by the same European company as that of the Musical Fidelity. I may keep the MF - for the money it is surprising.

Hi sonata
I've checked out the Musical Fidelity M1 and it looks like a real nice unit. There is only one thing that bothers me about it. It's designed in England and manufactured in Taiwan. I would rather spend a little more(Bel Canto)and get something made in the good old USA. The Simaudio Neo 260d is a nice unit also and is manufactured in Canada, but it lists for $2000.00. A stretch for my budget.

When I owned a McIntosh MCD-1100 player I needed to use three digital inputs. To use the BNC on the McIntosh I had a cable made with RCA on one end and BNC for the McIntosh end. That worked nicely. Later when I wanted to temporarily use that cable I purchased a BNC to RCA adaptor from Rat Shack. No issues with the sound there either.

Toobs, another question...

Why not avoid the transport altogether and get a good media server to feed your DAC(s)? It will blow away any transport and give you incredible convenience/access to your library.

I'm not interested in servers or anything to do with computer audio at all. Having a server means downloading music to it and I just can't be bothered.

Downloading or ripping. But once and done - then no more fishing out CD cases... you wind up saving a ton of time if you think big picture.

Just ordered the Bel Canto cd3 transport:woot:

More to come..........................
