I tried multiple amps with my S5 (CJ350, Hegel h30, VAC450, Constellation Centaur). Constellation was best by a wide margin. Woke up the woofers and added delicate sweet transparency. If on a budget would buy the Hegel and call it a day.

Thanks Darin.

Here is my short list:

VAC 160i
Devialet 170/240
Accuphase e-460
D'Agostino Stereo (with CP800)

I want the VAC....but tubes, no tube cage (I believe), kids....don't mix. But oh boy, I bet that would sound sweet.
Devialet - reactions are mixed....long break in....but Magico and Devialet is a common pairing (so is VAC).
Accuphase e-460 - probably the most logical choice with built in DAC and Phonostage.
D'Agostino Stereo - one of the recommended amps to pair with the S5's by HiFi News.

Both great choices.

I'd also be interested in the Accuphase e-560 with its class A sound. I know the E460 is rated with more power but does it really have more oomph ?

Great point. A friend of mine has the S5 and a 25 watt Class A integrated (Vitus) and says its terrific.

I think Accuphase and Dag would be on my shortlist for the S5...

I would choose tubes for this application. I think it would warm up the highs. Add a bit of smoothness to the top.
I auditioned the S5 with Vitus SS101. I think your Vac would be a better choice.

The Aesthetix Atlas Signature or Monos would be perfect for the S5s.

SoundStage! Network's tests show their sensitivity is only 87.0dB (averaged 300Hz-3kHz, 2.83V/1m), not the 90db claimed by Magico.

Great suggestions. Thanks guys. I'm curious about the Devialet on the s5's too.

I have the E-560 at home right now ... still boxed. Give me a week or so, and I will try this combo.

There is also an interesting, 25 WPC class A Vitus integrated which is worth a try.

I have heard the Devialet with Magicos (but not the S5) several times at shows, but I was never impressed.

The MSB S200 is also hard to beat - especially for the price. I have loved it on my S5s ... but moved to MSB monos since :p

Adam, would love to hear what you think of the Accuphase and the Vitus if you try it!
