Any experience with Panasonic DP-UB9000 movie player?

I own the 9000 and the Oppo 205 side by side. The 205 is collecting dust now. This Panny is visually on another level. Colors are so much more richer. Blacks are far better. Literally the Panny is unmatched.

I use a 9000 in a secondary system (basically my UHD system). I moved the old UHD and Oppo 203 upstairs to the bonus room (basically a guest bedroom) as the video and audio on the 9000 were better than the Oppo 203. I also bought a Panasonic 820 for the main system (don't use the audio) and movied the Oppo 105 to another back-up system.

I ordered a esoteric k01xd dac/transport, if I also buy a Panasonic DP-UB9000 for playing movies can I bypass the Panasonic dac and play the movie audio through k01xd (for improved sound quality) when watching movies via the Panasonic? I see the Esoteric has 2 digital inputs RCA and optical. The Panasonic has an optical and coaxial output. Therefore what I want to do is feed video to my TV via HDMI from Panasonic but feed audio from Panasonic to esoteric via one of the connections previously mentioned so I can listen to movies via my 2 channel system through the esoteric dac and not the Panasonic dac.
Currently I have an Ayre dx5 Blu-ray player for movies via hdmi but movie audio plays through an Ayre QX5 via AES/EBU CABLE. it works great but the esoteric does not have AES/EBU input and the dx5 does not have any other digital outputs so I cannot get it to play movie audio through esoteric which is why I am looking to buy the Panasonic

Yes, you can always connect a digital audio output (coaxial, optical, etc.) from a Blu-Ray/DVD/CD player to another device and use the second device to process the audio.
So in your case, you can connect the Panasonic to the Esoteric to process your audio.
That said, movies are encoded in multichannel and the esoteric is a 2-channel device. So you would actually not be getting the sound of the movie as it was intended.
If you are still interested in physical discs, you better grab a good player while they are still around. Several manufacturers have stopped making them as more and more people are choosing to stream (there is actually more 4K material available for streaming than on physical discs).

I have the oppo 203. I never use it. Streaming may not be as good, but it's so easy.
If anyone is looking for a player, I'd sell mine.

Actually there is more high definition content available via streaming than via physical media. So I venture to say that streaming is better than playing a disc.

I have the Panny 9000 in my theater. Yes, you can do what you want. Run Coax to your Esoteric and you’ll get sound from it. Just mute the TV sound and you’re good. I’m not using it this way, but I do use my Oppo 205 in the other room exactly like this. If you’re ok with only 2 channels for movies, your plan would work.
As mentioned, I also have the Oppo 205, and don’t find the difference to be as stark as others have mentioned (both of mine are playing to current year OLED panels) The Oppo has been much less likely to freeze while playing 4K discs, so from that standpoint I’m disappointed in the Panasonic.
Side note: listen to the built-in DAC in the movie player too. The ones in both the Oppo and Panasonic are actually quite good. In some ways the one in the Oppo sounds better than my moderately expensive outboard “audiophile” DAC...

I have the OPPO 203 and 205 and they both have the same Video guts. The difference start in the audio area, where the 205 excels. .
The Panny, well for the price is pretty hard to beat in the video area considering the nutty prices for the OPPO 203 and 205 on the used market.

Agree that 4K UD movies from optical discs if properly done can get you better video and audio due to less compression. But that does not mean that video and sound quality of streamed 4K UD is bad by any means.
I still own a player (Oppo 205) but Streaming 4K UD movies is so convenient and content is so much more widely available that I don’t bother with optical discs anymore.

Agreed. I'm just not one to watch a movie over and over. So buying the physical copy doesn't make much sense.
I'm still buy CDs weekly though.

Exactly my feelings as well. The only discs in my collection are the Pixar movies that my kids loved to watch repeatedly. And those movies are now available in higher video resolution via streaming! I think I need to empty some drawers!

We're using both the OPPO UDP-203 and the Panasonic DP-UB420 (our current projector does not support Dolby Vision). The UDP-203 for DVDs and Blu-rays, and the DP-UB420 for 4K Blu-ray.
The UDP-203 is a more responsive player. But the DP-UB420 has better tone mapping which helps with HDR content on our low output projector. For whatever reason, we run into some audio locking issues with the DP-UB420 when starting playback—I usually have to pause and hit chapter-back one or two times before it locks on properly.
In my opinion the video quality between 1080p Blu-ray (20Mbps - 40Mbps H.264) and 1080p streaming (max ~8Mbps HEVC), as well as between 4K Blu-ray (60Mbps - 100Mbps HEVC) and UHD streaming (max ~20Mbps HEVC) is significant. Also audio streaming tends to be something like Dolby Digital Plus instead of lossless. And sometimes the dynamic range is compressed to cater to typical home setups. Kaleidescape encodes, which are downloaded on demand, will go even higher than 4K Blu-ray in some cases, but comes with an expensive entry price.

I notice the biggest difference while streaming porn. Pornhub just isn't the quality of the blu ray.
