State of Confusion
Just wondering if there are any others here that have a passion for cycling. I've been a mountain biker for 20+ years and have gotten into cyclocross/road riding just within the past three years. I raced in our local Cyclocross series for the past couple of years and really enjoy that. It's nothing too crazy, just a bunch of like-minded riders that want to get out and punish themselves and drink a little beer afterwards.

There's something about getting out there, whether pavement or dirt, and knowing that you and only you are in control of where you go and how long it takes. 20, 30, 50, 100 miles today? I love pushing myself as far as I can and when I need to stop and take a breather, realizing that I need to ride all the way back to where I started! I'm using a Cyclocross bike on the road for now because many places I ride are dirt/gravel roads and a CX bike allows the use of fatter tires. I like getting off the beaten path and exploring the roads less traveled. I'm looking at the possibility of a new bike (most likely next year) and am thinking about something like this carbon fiber beauty:

It's amazing how expensive bikes have gotten likely. It's almost as bad as audio gear!

I'm hoping that there are others here that are willing to share stories, rides, ideas, etc...

WOW!!!!! That Cannondale is beautiful. I'm almost afraid to ask the price:o

I have a Specialized Stumpjumper M2FS that has been sitting for a couple of years. When the weather warms up it's going to the shop for new tires & tubes and a general check-up. Then I'll be peddling my rear all over the place.

Bob, the MSRP on that C'dale pictured is $5550.00! It has the Ultegra Di2 electronic shifting which is something I wouldn't be getting. I just don't like the plain black and white of the regular Ultegra frame. The regular Ultegra build is $3450.00 and I get a little discount from my local dealer so that would be doable, barely...

I love Stumpjumpers. Talk about history, wow. One of the first MTB's built. I can't believe that model is still going strong. Of course the new ones don't have much resemblance to the earlier models. We have a good network of trails here in Western Michigan so I can hit different ones and not get burned out on the same old thing. I ride a Niner frame with their carbon fork. I've had it for four years now and love the 29" wheels. I'll post a pic of it later on.

Beautiful ride there, Doug! Is that an Evo? Roadie here, on a Giant TCR Advanced SL. Kills my old Trek Madone! This is my first year riding all winter. And yes, people don't realize how much gear there is in cycling! Gear for the bike, gear for warm weather riding, gear for cold weather riding, gear for the car to transport the rest of the gear, LOL!

I also have a Titus Motolite, but hardly use that. Wish I got into trail riding more. It's a great bike.

And big congrats on placing in CX! That's some serious, dirty fun!

Allen,

That's their Super X carbon 'cross bike. As far as I know it's not the same as the Super Six Evo frames of their road bikes. I've been going back and forth between road and another cross bike and think for my area, 'cross is the way to go.

You're right about all the gear! All different types of clothes for all different types of weather, hats, gloves, shoes, booties, etc... It's nuts!

Nice bike that Titus. Did they go out of business or did the owner start Pivot bikes? I can never remember where he came from.

That's a sweet ride Doug. I do some cycling and Duathlon's. I'm mostly a runner. I have aa Giant Defy as my ride.

Paul

Paul, I like the whole Duathlon thing. I never was much of a swimmer so Tri's are definitely out for me! I have great respect for runner's. I enjoy it but can never get to where I'd like to be due to pain issues that always seem to crop up.

Doug:

Southern CA. We don't have anything near as gnarly down here. Granted I'd probably break something if we did (not talking bike either). The only local ski/mtb park is closed to anything over 6" now and my fat ass can't pedal any longer ;) Perhaps Mammoth is in the cards this summer.

Doug: Heard Titus went out of business because of poor financial handling, but didn't realize they started Pivot instead. Since I don't trail that much, I haven't been up on the MTB scene. But if I were to get one today, Stumpjumper FSR would be it.

Mike: Sweet Banshee! Definitely get out and user her more! Any good trails by you?

Allen, If I have this right I think the founder of Titus sold the company and then left to start Pivot after awhile. I don't get out to the trails nearly as much as I would like. It's so much easier hoping on my cross bike and hitting the road without having to drive to a trailhead.

Allen:

It's been a few years but I know a few trails I used to ride are no longer open. Either way, in southern CA, we have a plenty of choices...as long as you're willing to pedal up.

There used to be a few trails near JPL on the outskirts of Pasadena where you could buy a shuttle ride for $5. Guys w/ pickups would haul you and your bike to the top. A 10 minute car ride beats an hour plus hill climb any day :p

Here are a couple shots of my Niner mountain bike. I've had this for four years now and love the bigger wheel size. It took a little getting use to, going from 26" to 29" wheels, but I think it makes a difference at least for trails around here.

I'm a fair-weather cyclist getting back into it after some knee issues (tried 110 rpm workouts for awhile, not a good idea for me it turned out). Love all your bike pics! On the gear side it appeals just as audio does, high tech, beautiful designs, etc. My Madone shares a room with my soldering station, my favorite hobbies crammed in one small space!

Ha!

Just find a trail that allows you to be driven to the top and you're all set!:D
Where's the fun in that?!:D

Doug, 29 is the way to go. If I got a new MTB now, I'd get a 29'er. Sharp looking Niner. Hardtail - that's hardcore!

Ron, nice looking Madone! My old one is a boring grey. What year is that? We should go riding then listening one day!
