I just auditioned the Altec 7 VOT speakers with tweeters and external cross over and I was shocked how good they are. The dynamics was amazing and stage was huge.

Any one owns them ? Wondering if it can fit in my room (14.5 X 24 ) also are they reliable ?

Any input would be gladly appreciate it

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the dark side ! ;)
Yes, they are extremely reliable and can handle a very high SPL. Remember, these speakers were originally made for theaters. They were not designed for home hifi.
The Altec 19 is the "Vott for the home".
But some examples were badly treated by their owners during all these years so you must be very careful if you decide to buy a pair and cannot listen to them.
Some compressions can also be in bad shape. We are talking of drivers that are often more than 50 years old and had often numerous owners.

The 416-A ( Alnico) Altec driver is certainly the best driver up to 800-1200 Hz depending on the set up, ever made on earth. The GPA 416-8B is very close though.
These drivers do not go very low but the bass they give is just the most natural one imho.
My 414A is not very far.

The problems with the VOTT and any vintage Altec speaker are :
-are the drivers in good shape ? And if they were restored, was it done properly ?
- how is the filter ? I think that the need for a tweeter comes from a filter not designed correctly. The VOTT is originally a two way speaker. And that is how it sounds the best imho, when the filter is properly made.
High Eff systems who sound the best are the most simple ones. 2 drivers. A compression with its horn and the "boomer". The Altec compressions are more than enough to reproduce natural music at realistic levels. There is never the feeling of missing some highs.
Look at the 19, the Shindo Latour, the Valencia... You won't find any tweeter or super tweeter. Just two way plain and simple designs.

My friend who built for me my speakers made a remarkable filter, especially for my drivers. He measured everything and listened.
Well made Altec speakers sound like heaven. Nothing comes close to them.
Look on the web for the many japanese set ups using VOTTs or TADs speakers. The rooms are not huge. The VOTTs can be used in rooms of only 20-25 m2.

Thank you Jerome.

Here are the components associated with this set of A7's:
Woofer - Altec Lansing Model 416-8C (Serial No. K174437-1082)
Midrange - Altec Lansing 288-8K (Serial No. K274654)
Tweeter - Eminence

I don't know nothing about the filter or what to look for.

This set up may be wonderful. But most Vott and 19's are usually with the 802 compression. It goes higher and avoids the need of a tweeter.

Paul.......I owned a pair of Altec Voice of the Theater speakers in 1968 and 1969. Mine were the old grey painted version with the green horns and compression drivers mounted outside on top of the speaker. They were 16 ohm speakers with a sensitivity of 102 dB with one watt input. I drove them with a pair of McIntosh MC30 mono tube amplifiers (30 watts) and a Dynaco PAS3 preamp. The room was in an old Victorian home in San Francisco. I had them set up in a room that was approximately 18' x 25' with a 10' ceiling. Those Altec's could literally shake and rattle the house. The sound presented itself as live music with great dynamic range. Most of the time the MC30's were loafing to drive the Altec's to a room filling volume. These speakers could have easily filled a 50' x 80' room with sound. I ultimately sold them because I moved twice and the A7's were a bear to handle. My friends quickly grew tired of being asked to help me move the behemoths. I moved to the Altec Valencia speakers that I kept for years and wish I still owned. They sounded excellent with the McIntosh mono amps, and later with a McIntosh MA230 integrated amplifier.

My Altec Voice of the Theater speakers looked like this. Ugly, but they sure put out some fine sound.

My Altec Valencia's had the same 15" woofers with the Altec horn and compression driver as the A7 but packaged in a much more attractive furniture grade cabinet.

Wow. Nice Dan. Thank you so much for reply. I wonder the Valencia can give the wall of sounds like the VOT does.

Paul.......The Valencia's sound is very similar to the Voice of the Theater. I elevated my Valencia's on 8" custom veneered stands. Raising the cabinets helped with the horn elevation for my seating. The Valencia's produce a big performance sound, very much like a live music performance.

Dan....
That is the essential key with the Valencia or any horn speaker. Get the horn at the ear level !
But then, one may have to work on the filter because raising the 416 driver will impact the response in the bass and modify the overall balance.
The 19 is easier because the horn is already closer to ear level.

Anyone can tell me how this foam works around the horn? How does the sound changes ?

Any images of where it's applied? I wouldn't imagine foam being very helpful when it comes to deadening the horn from resonances. But placed in the mouth, it may reduce HOMs(high order modes) and give a smoother sound.

Thanks. Here is the pic where those form apply. Some said it will make them less sounds of horn.
