For me it's hands down Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide."

Brilliant lyrics (a lost art nowadays! :( ) and Stevie Nicks at her absolute best. I say I love the first verse but all three verses just send me soaring! Plus some brilliant guitar work by Lindsey Buckingham!

I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'Til the landslide brought it down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
And I'm getting older too
Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around

And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down
The landslide will bring it down

At five other groups have done "Landslide" and The Smashing Pumpkins do a great rendition of this Fleetwood Mac song!

Great thread Myles. I'd have to say right now Joni Mitchell's song "Blue" has the most meaning for me. Written after a tough breakup with Graham Nash and subsequent whirlwind relationship with James Taylor whilst travelling around Europe, this song is achingly honest, almost like Joni is sharing some poetry from her private journal. I find solice in the reflective moodiness of this song when i'm feeling down, and it never fails to lift me up :).

Btw, the 24kt gold Hoffman/DCC remaster is well worth adding to your collection if you can find a copy

very un-PC in the least, my Japanese Shiksa hates it but hits close to home (for me).

"Every Picture Tells A Story"

Spent some time feelin' inferior
standing in front of my mirror
Combed my hair in a thousand ways
but I came out looking just the same

Daddy said, "Son, you better see the world
I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to leave
But remember one thing don't lose your head
to a woman that'll spend your bread"
So I got out

Paris was a place you could hide away
if you felt you didn't fit in
French police wouldn't give me no peace
They claimed I was a nasty person
Down along the Left Bank minding my own
Was knocked down by a human stampede
Got arrested for inciting a peacful riot
when all I wanted was a cup of tea
I was accused
I moved on

Down in Rome I wasn't getting enough
of the things that keeps a young man alive
My body stunk but I kept my funk
at a time when I was right out of luck
Getting desperate indeed I was
Looking like a tourist attraction
Oh my dear I better get out of here
'for the Vatican don't give no sanction
I wasn't ready for that, no no

I moved right out east yeah!
On the Peking ferry I was feeling merry
sailing on my way back here
I fell in love with a slit eyed lady
by the light of an eastern moon
Shangai Lil never used the pill
She claimed that it just ain't natural
She took me up on deck and bit my neck
Oh people I was glad I found her
Oh yeah I was glad I found her

I firmly believe that I didn't need anyone but me
I sincerely thought I was so complete
Look how wrong you can be

The women I've known I wouldn't let tie my shoe
They wouldn't give you the time of day
But the slit eyed lady knocked me off my feet
God I was glad I found her
And if they had the words I could tell to you
to help you on the way down the road
I couldn't quote you no Dickens, Shelley or Keats
'cause it's all been said before
Make the best out of the bad just laugh it off
You didn't have to come here anyway
So remember, every picture tells a story don't it

Hi David,

How does your Joni Mitchell "Blue" DCC Gold disc compare to the 192/24 WAV or AIFF download from HDTracks?

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken, I haven't purchased the 24/192 recording from HD tracks so I couldn't say, though some very knowledgeable folk on Steve Hoffman forums discussed those two releases in detail (including technical analysis of the two recordings) and concluded the 24kt gold Hoffman remaster is much superior & remains a masterpiece. That's why you'll hear me bang on about the importance of mastering vs more 'bits'.

For the DCC remaster, Steve was given exclusive access to the original master tapes and spent 5 weeks remastering the recording (which is almost unheard of these days). Steve explained in his TAS interview in 2001 how he added one layer of tubes in order to address the "slightly brittle" sounding solid state mastertape in order to open up the stage & add body and warmth to the players. Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Bodhi

I'm not a hero worshipper but I love Leonard Cohen.

"Anthem"

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.

Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.

Sometimes I think Seger wrote the soundtrack for my life. This isn't the only song.

"Night Moves"

I was a little too tall
Could've used a few pounds
Tight pants points hardly reknown
She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points all her own sitting way up high
Way up firm and high

Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my '60 Chevy
Workin' on mysteries without any clues
Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to make some front page drive-in news
Workin' on our night moves
In the summertime
In the sweet summertime

We weren't in love, oh no, far from it
We weren't searchin' for some pie in the sky summit
We were just young and restless and bored
Livin' by the sword
And we'd steal away every chance we could
To the backroom, to the alley or the trusty woods
I used her, she used me
But neither one cared
We were gettin' our share
Workin' on our night moves
Tryin' to lose the awkward teenage blues
Workin' on our night moves
And it was summertime

And oh the wonder
We felt the lightning
And we waited on the thunder
Waited on the thunder

I awoke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves
When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in

Oh how they fool me dominate and rule me
They keep me waiting here forever

Present yet elusive passive yet abusive
Tearing out the heart in utter silence
All these impermanent things
Well they point in all directions like secondhand reflections
And they're leading us to subtle shades of violence

All these impermanent things
Well they all add up to zero they make-believe that they're my hero
Then they fill my mind with doubt and false desires

There are many.

The first that comes to mind is Box Of Rain by the Grateful Dead.

It's a beautiful meditation on the impermanence of life. Or something like that.
