To replace or repair Mc7300?

Got a McIntosh MC7300 amp used off ebay(cheap). It keeps shutting down. Been running a little warm too. It came from the N.J. coast. Has a musty smell to it. I have it running off output 2 of my McIntosh MAC6700 receiver. With MQ101 Equalizer in between output 2 & 7300 amp. To use my ML 1 speakers. I'm using output one of receiver to run my B & W CDM 7 speakers. Should I buy the new McIntosh MC152 or try to find a good MC352 or MC 402 from Audio Classics ? I had the 7300 fixed once at a McIntosh dealer. Don't feel like taking a chance on another repair. Thanks for any suggestions on this matter.

surrounded by sound.......The McIntosh MC7300 power amplifier was manufactured between 1991 and 1995. At best your amp is at least 20 years old. There were two versions of the MC7300. The earliest version had Panloc with the Panloc buttons on the faceplate. The later version was made without the Panloc feature. If your amplifier has the Panloc buttons on the face it is probably 23 or 24 years old. My suspicion is the power supply capacitors. Considering the age of the amplifier it is time to have the power supply caps replaced. Since the amp is running warm and shutting down it may be that the voltage rails are not providing the proper voltages to the various sections of the amp. Fortunately the MC7300 has the McIntosh Sentry Monitor circuit and thermal shutdown circuit to monitor voltages at the output, as well as the temperature of the output transistors. If the amp is shutting itself down, there is a problem that needs attention. I would not continue to use the amplifier until it has been serviced.

The MC7300 delivers 300 watts per channel. If you are thinking of replacing it with a more modern McIntosh amplifier, the MC352 would be my recommendation. I owned and enjoyed the MC352 for years. It is a powerhouse and sounds very clean.

Mike I did not have Audio Classics look at it. I live in Metro Detroit. If it wasn't for Mom's poor health. And my bad back.I'd ship it to them. The original box looks like it went through the battle of Stalingrad. Wonder if Audio Classics could send me a good shipping box? I used to deliver new cars to upstate N.Y.. I could drive to Vestal in my sleep. I'm leaning towards the new MC150.
 
Double D, I was quoted a price of $6300.00 for a new MC302 out the door. Includes delivery & set up. To replace my MC7300 with panloc. Does that sound good to you ?
 
Double D......Got the MC7300 repaired free of charge. From a top McIntosh dealer in Ann Arbor. Hooked it back up to my ML 1's for my secondary system. Don't know what all they did to repair the amp. But sounds good. The new Transparent RCA cables helped too.

SBS.......I apologize for not responding to your question about the MC302. I missed that post entirely until today. I think you were wise to have the MC7300 repaired. Not only are you back in business, you still have some jingle in your pocket.
 
Double -D...The Mac 7300 still going strong. Now to take the MVP 891 back to dealer again. It needs some more work. Amazing how the older Mac equipment seems to have better quality.
