TIDAL stuttering issues

I use TIDAL quite a bit to listen to albums I don't own. I'm not having much luck with TIDAL on my S1 as the music stutters quite a bit. The interesting part is the song timer on the Lumin continues even though the music is stuttering. I have a uVerse fiber 45MB circuit and seem to have good bandwidth whenever I run Speedtest.net. I've re-booted my S1 a few times with no luck.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian ...

Hi Brian,

Do you have the S1 plugged into a gigabit router and on the same wifi circuit? I've never had any streaming issues with either my A1, D1 or S1?

1. Please confirm you're connecting the Lumin S1 to the WiFi router with a network cable, without going through additional equipment (such as additional switch) or conversion (WiFi client / powerline adaptor).

2. Please try different Tidal albums and see if only some albums are affected.

3. If users have network cable connection to adequate broadband, Tidal stuttering issues are usually regional Tidal server side issues. If you don't mind you can tell us your country. Tidal in Asia Pacific tends to be not as good.

Peter,

I use TIDAL HiFi (lossless) in the US. My S1 is connected to a Netgear 8 port-Gigabit switch. For WiFi I have a Netgear AC1200 wireless router connected via a CAT6e cable to the switch.. I have the router configured as a wireless access point (WAP) and I connect my Lumin app via this WAP. I typically get 30 - 40MB of internet bandwidth via WiFi. I've tried many different albums.

Please confirm your Lumin S1 connection to broadband Internet does not go through WiFi, i.e. something like
Lumin S1 - network cable - Netgear switch - network cable - Netgear router - internet

Peter,

My Lumin S1 doesn't connect to the broadband Internet via WiFi. The S1 connects to the Internet as follows: Internet provider router --> network cable --> gigabit switch --> network cable --> Lumin S1. I do this because my Internet broadband connection enters my home on the 2nd floor of my home and I then have a 75 foot network cable from the internet provider's router to a gigabit switch on my 1st floor where my stereo system is and the S1 connects to the gigabit switch via a network cable.

I know the iPad app connects to the S1 via WiFi but is there a way to know if the S1 is connecting to the broadband Internet via WiFi?

Lumin players do not support WiFi, so unless you're using a WiFi to Ethernet converter or setup a router as a WiFi Client or bridge, Lumin players will be playing Tidal using the wired connection, if you play Tidal through Lumin app. (WiFi is only used by the Lumin app to manage the Lumin playlist or browsing of music).

If you play Tidal using Tidal app then AirPlay to Lumin, then you'll be using WiFi to stream the Tidal music from internet to iOS device, then WiFi again from iOS device to Lumin player.

Try both Lumin app and Tidal app, see how they behave for Tidal.

Peter,

I only play Tidal using the Tidal icon on the Lumin app. The stuttering issue is random as I've been listening to Tidal music for the past hour with no stuttering issues. It's the same album that stuttered quite a bit last night.

Is there a way to know the broadband bandwidth speed being delivered to the Lumin? This would help me isolate if the issue is with my Internet provider (AT&T Uverse).

Unfortunately, random Tidal stuttering was what some people experienced in certain regions, across different playback devices.

You should send a help request to Tidal.

While there is no built-in facility inside the Lumin player to determine bandwidth, you can connect a PC to the same switch that the Lumin connects to and use the PC to determine the bandwidth.

You may also launch a command prompt in the PC, then type ping <router IP address>, such as:
ping 192.168.1.1
and observe that all packets should be received in a minimum time (e.g. lower than 0.3ms), consistently without exception. If some packets take much longer to arrive there is a problem with your home network.

P.S. I'll be on vacation in a few hours, and so may not be able to continue to participate in this forum until 23rd.

Peter,

I realize you may be on vacation. I'm starting to think it's my Internet provider which is AT&T UVerse. I say this because I accessed Tidal from my smart phone at the same time I was experiencing Tidal stuttering on the Lumin and my smart phone Tidal playback was perfect. I've never experienced stuttering of Tidal when using my smart phone. I've been reading posts from other UVerse customers that complain about periods of time where their ping times exceed 500ms.

Does anyone else with UVerse have issues with Tidal music stuttering at random times of the day on your Lumin?

Thanks in advance,
Brian ...

Tidal has been and continued to be very stable in my home. I listen via my S-1.

My LUMIN D1 exhibited the same stuttering behavior today, twice. Pausing the stream with the LUMIN app and then hitting play helped it and after experiencing it happen two times within five minutes I had about three hours of uninterrupted service afterwards.

I use Xfinity broadband with everything hardwired CAT 5e.

iin my caae i think UVerse is the problem. at random times of the fmday my ping value is over 500ms which is when Tidal stutters. lots of UVerse customers complain abiut the high ping times.
I have a call into at&t but I'm not sure they'll be able to correct it.

Brian ...

if you don't have the Tidal stuttering issue then iyou can run a speedtest net & you'll likely see your ping time below 20ms.

Peter,

After some isolation testing I'm 99% sure that my Tidal stuttering issues are due to the excessive ping time of my AT&T UVerse Internet connection. Many other UVerse customers complain about excessive ping times impacting their ability to successfully play video games. It's common for me to have ping time ranging from 2ms to >900ms. Of course the Tidal stuttering happens when the ping times are high. I'm going to have the AT&T tech come out for a service call although I have no confidence he can correct what may be an AT&T Internet routing issue.

Give this a try for your ping test http://www.pingtest.net/

Of course speedtest also provides a ping measurement but pingtest gives a little more data about the ping. You will need to activate java for it to work

I would say AT&T is doing what they usually do and that is to throttle your speed during high traffic times. ( my neighbor has AT&T issues all the time. Me I'm on Brighthouse cable with NO issues. )

Thx Chris. There are lots of different Java downloads. Can you let me know the Java URL for Windows 10 OS?

Thx,
Brian ...
