A new linux version is rising in audioland. A small group nowadays is integrating it in their audiosystem. It is called Gentooplayer. To remember: linux consists of multiple distributions, well known are Fedora, Ubuntu, Suse, Debian, and a less well known, Gentoo. This Gentooplayer is modified for audio, with several tweaks to give a better sound.

What makes this interesting: the amount of protocols it supports: This from their website:

GentooPlayer offers images for different platforms and includes several audiophile players, some of which require the purchase of a license:

Squeezelite-R2, Squeezelite, Mpd, UpMPDcli, BubbleUpnp, Networkaudiod (NAD), RoonBridge, AirPlay, HQPlayer Embedded, HQPlayer, LMS (LogitechMediaServer), Sox-dsd, RoonServer, Cantata (mpd Client)... Ability to install JRiver Media Center and NoMachine (remote desktop software)

And secondly: it does support the Diretta protocol, and this makes me interested, because on listening tests Diretta is the top sounding protocol there is available.

Is Gentooplayer worth it? For download it is available for just 69 euro for a hardware specified lifetime version.

Gentooplayer doesn't cost anything. If you reread the download page more closely, it says "donation", not "cost" or "payment". Additionally, it says "minimum donation".

If you support what the project is doing, give generously if you can. But I don't believe it is required.
 
A sad update: It is not possible for me to boot Gentooplayer. Maybe for a RPI, but not on my nuc. Then this experiment quickly ends.
 
Is there a walk-through for configuring Gentooplayer. Have it loaded on a Mercury V2. It boots ok and presents some 30 different parameters that need to be completed

One such setting is to enable MPD players. This has been enabled and I've tried several iOS-based players but none recognise the device

Seem to be spending money making no progress

Some tips would assist
