Just picked up a pair of M5G tables to set up with a mixer. :D

Anyone using these?
I know of a few mods and such but I think I'll keep it simple. Researching cartridge suggestions in the sub $500 range that have good synergy.

I hear from Technics/Panasonic that they intend to reintroduce a current "successor" to the infamous line of pro DJ Technics Direct Drive tables.

For convenience sake I run a Technics SL-1600 in my upstairs living room / dining room "casual" listening setup. I love it. It's easy to operate (and returns automatically if ignored while cooking dinner, etc.) and sounds great with decent isolation and amazingly low noise floor. Currently running a Soundsmith retipped Denon DL-300 MC cart on it with Lehmann Black Cube SE II (two chassis) phono amp.

I'm sure the SL-1210 M5G is a superior deck in some ways compared to the SL-1600, but regardless, the SL series in general are no slouches.

Are you wanting to go "DJ" with the 1210's and back queue with carts or what?....depending on your usage, different carts would be needed.

Thanks for your thoughts Mike.
I'm not going to be scratching but I may (and my kids may, as this is also a ploy to get them more into vinyl) want to back queue up tracks.
There are a pair of worn Shure carts already installed but I'm thinking of swapping them out for something like DL-103 MC carts.

Sounds like fun, Chris. Would love to see your setup when done. and not a bad idea about getting the kids into vinyl. So far, my kids still like streaming...

Hi Chris,

I use a pair of 1210 M5Gs for beatmatch mixing. For scratchers typically Shure M44-7s are the standard because of their insane tracking ability. For beatmatch DJs the choices become much greater. I'm partial to Ortofon Concorde cartridges myself. Plug and Play as alignment and overhang are fixed. I'd think twice about using any MC carts if you'll be back cueing. You can but doing so can severely shorten those cartridges' lives.

Thanks Allen. Sure to load up a pic when i get things setup.

Jack, appreciate the Ortofon suggestion. Are you using the ProS 5mV output carts?
I am in agreement on not using MC for beat matching and back-cueing.
Mixing is more my interest for fun rather than beat matching although I appreciate those DJs that can do it.

Fun stuff Chris.

I agree with Jack in that most MC carts aren't going to be too friendly if you want to do any queuing. Another option would be to find a couple of Stanton 681 EEE Mk III's to use. With original NOS stylii they track and sound great. I do believe the 681 EEE Mk III is back-queue friendly (as many a radio station used them back in the day) but since I've not personally back-queued a single record in my life I can't say for sure...

I Frankensteined mine. For dance music I use the PRO S cartridge but use Nightclub Styli. The PRO S is rounder sounding, I prefer the Nightclub because it is more extended up top so does Trance and Progressive House' atmospherics better for my tastes. I haven't tried the Nightclub Mk2. I've had these Orts since 2003. They are still going strong. When I want some refinement, I just attach OM-40 Styli. The OM-40 used to be the top Ortofon MM before the Black, Bronze and Reds came out. Can't back cue with the OM-40 though. Compliance is too high.

Going to try the Zu-103 modified denon :)

I ran a Zu-Denon 103 on my SP-15 turntable for about a year. Was fantastic. If you have a Jelco arm on the SL-1210 you'll likely need the extra-heavy counterweight to balance that block of Zu-aluminum. I have one of those heavy counterweights somewhere around here. Would let it go cheap if you're interested.
