Schiit Audio Yggdrasil Analog 2 DAC - Review

This dac was on the short list for some time. The deal didn’t go through since the required number of coax and optical inputs fell short and would have meant upstream switching, which was messy with more cabling. Certainly value for money and can be hardware upgraded as development continues.

Not really sure what the purpose of that review was other than content filler. I read it a couple of times and concluded that the author thought the DAC was great before the upgrade and even better after. I assume from the tone of the "review" that he owns it and has through both versions. No context for his opinion other DAC's considered or even his own associated equipment. At least when Al has stated the same opinion multiple times we know something about his other gear and other DACs he has tried. Must be a slow month at PFA after the Show reports.

Joe.......Thanks for the link to the Yggdrasil review. It was entertaining. I own the Schiit Audio Yggdrasil Analog 2 DAC, listening to it right now as a matter of fact. I reviewed the Yggdrasil in January 2018, Schiit Audio Yggdrasil Review , and also wrote a review comparing the Yggdrasil to the Esoteric K-01X DAC, Esoteric K-01X Versus Schiit Audio Yggdrasil . It was an eye opening experience to perform a direct A/B comparison between a $20K Esoteric component and a $2.4K Schiit Audio component, discovering how close the performance of the two components played out. I still own the Esoteric K-01X and the Schiit Audio Yggdrasil. Each DAC is quite remarkable in its own right, although I find myself listening to the Yggdrasil more. It is an astonishing DAC.

Now with my new Octave preamp in place I can finally hear at just how high a level the Yggdrasil can perform in terms of believability and exquisite shading of tonal color, and in terms of raw resolution -- micro-resolution of timbral detail and separation of instruments. The quality of life-like transients is remarkable. As you say, it is an astonishing DAC.

It performs at such a high level in my system that at this point I do not find myself looking for something else.

Yay another professional review full of weak and meaningless assertions like this:
Unlike other DACs that are overly analytical and can be considered too shrill, the Analog 2 infuses detail with musicality, this allows users to just lay back and enjoy music for what it is without critically analyzing.
WHAT are some of the DACs the author considers shrill?

And this:
For what it is worth, it also places amongst the best of the best in terms of performance and value for money in what a digital to analog converter offers.
WHAT are some of the "best of the best" DACs? They're certainly not named here.

jdandy's Esoteric vs. Yggdrasil comparison was far more interesting and enlightening.

"However, for the budding audiophile who wishes to experience full immersion and the best of what music can be rendered..."

If being a budding audiophile means that I am much younger, I say AMEN!!!

If not, blah...

A member of our audio club had a new Yaggy at a recent meeting. He was comparing back and forth with an Oppo and a Benchmark. While his system and environment was completely different then mine (of course) it was a direct comparison and I have had a couple of Benchmarks' in my environment, so I know what to expect.

I could instantly tell when he switch the Yaggy in; it was obvious the difference and certain much better then the other two in my view. At some point I would love to directly compare it in my system, but judging from my knowledge of the Benchmark in my system I could make a fairly decent judgement.

The Yaggy is excellent if you are running at 96khz or below... but when you really stretch your digital muscle (DSD and especially DSD512) the over all musicality I would give to T+A. Even though both are fantastic values, in total fairness the T+A is more money.
