Samsung Galaxy Buds Arrived

The Samsung Galaxy Buds arrived this afternoon. These are a wonderful accessory to my new Samsung Galaxy S10 phone. I managed to get the Galaxy Buds for free as part of the Samsung pre-order promotion when I purchased the Galaxy S10. All pre-orders made prior to the release date for the Galaxy S10 phone received a promotion code good for $130.00 in the Samsung Store. The Galaxy Buds are $129.99. My promotion code was all it took to get the Galaxy Buds delivered including free shipping. Color me happy.


The Galaxy Buds sound very good with a decent bass response. Once paired they connect via Bluetooth 5.0 to the phone the moment the case is opened. The Buds are tiny and fit comfortably in my ears without falling out thanks to soft silicon ends that seal in the ear and soft tabs that with a slight twist fold into the recess in your ear. Samsung provides 3 pairs of ends and 3 pair of soft tabs in different sizes to fit your ear canal and your ear fold. The Galaxy Buds are touch sensitive and lightly tapping them or touching and holding them performs multiple control functions. For example a tap and hold on the right Bud lowers the volume, while a tap and hold on the left bud raises the volume. A single tap pauses your music, where a double tap advances to the next track, and a triple tap takes you back a track.


You can also receive phone calls on the Buds. I was listening to some music on my phone with the Buds when a friend called. She is in my Contacts, so her name was announced in my ear and a double tap on the right Bud answered the call. There is a microphone in the Galaxy Bud so I was able to speak normally while taking the call. A single tap ended the call and the music returned. This took place while I was in the dining room and my phone was in the office at the other end of my home. Darn cool if you ask me.


There is software that runs on the Samsung Galaxy S10 that provides control of equalization, turns on and off the Buds ability to hear ambient sound if you wish (they seal outside noise very well), and allows you to locate your Galaxy Buds if misplaced by causing the Buds to produce a chirping sound. This Samsung app is called Galaxy Wearable and can be downloaded from the Galaxy Store. The Galaxy Buds are Bluetooth compatible with other Android phones, as well as iPhones although the Galaxy Wearable app is not available for iPhone.


I have been listening to the new Galaxy Buds for over three hours. They are comfortable, seal out ambient noise extremely well, and sound very good. They charge in the case both wireless and when the case is plugged in to a USB-C charger. The case acts as a charging station once the Buds have run out of juice (about 5 hours) and will provide approximately 7 hours additional charge for the Buds. Another nice feature is the wireless charging and Power Share feature that the new Galaxy S10 series phones provide. Turn on Power Share on the S10 phone, place the Galaxy Buds in their case, place the case on the back of the Galaxy S10 and presto, they are charging. The Galaxy S10 phone can be charging while also charging the Buds. This means you can travel with the S10, the Galaxy Buds, and a single charger. Pretty slick.


I selected the black Galaxy Buds. They are available in black, white, and yellow. My thinking is the black ones will not show finger grim like the white and yellow ones will over time. My case is also black, surprisingly small with smooth rounded edges, allowing me to slip the Galaxy Buds case in the watch pocket of my jeans and retrieve it easily.


With only a few hours of use I already like the Galaxy Buds a lot. Even if I hadn't gotten them free with the pre-order program I would have purchased them. The Galaxy Buds are certainly worth their relatively modest price. The sound is damn good, the comfort level is excellent, and the wireless control features and Bluetooth 5.0 are marvelous. Recommended.

I imagine these being Samsung/Galaxy, they wouldn’t offer all of the cool features with iOS stuff - perhaps just the basic playback and microphone? I’m trying to find wireless earbuds that are better than the Apple private label AirPods for a gift.

Sean.......I am enjoying the Galaxy Buds more than I expected. I had them in my ears yesterday for about three hours while I was outside doing yard work. They stay securely in your ears no matter what you are doing, unlike Apple's AirPods that just hang on your ear lobe and fall out quite easily. In addition, the AirPods have almost no bass response and don't sound nearly as good as the Galaxy Buds, plus the Buds are great at sealing out ambient sound.

I have listened to the Apple AirPods and was not impressed with the fit, the comfort, or the sound. The Galaxy Buds are Samsung's answer to the AirPods, are less expensive, and they check all the boxes in my opinion, fit, comfort, stay in the ear even with activity, and sound very good including decent bass. The Galaxy Buds are worth checking out.

How do they sound compared the the wired AKG buds that come with the S10?. the AKG buds that came with my S8 are extremely good.

Shane.......The wired AKG ear buds that came with my Galaxy S10 phone sound remarkably good. Comparing the wireless Galaxy buds to them does not reveal any performance differences. The Galaxy Buds are sleepers in my opinion, considerably better than you might think. Having capacitive touch controls for volume up and down, track selection, muting, and answering calls is icing on the cake. The Galaxy Wearable app also provides EQ control with individual presets or slider controls for individual frequency ranges. I leave mine set to Dynamic. No doubt about it, the Galaxy Buds are are a hit in my book.
