Bel Canto has come out with a new DAC. The DAC 2.7 has replaced the 2.5. Therefore the 2.5 is being offered at $1395($600 off the regular price). I have been eyeballing the 2.5 ever since I bought the Bel Canto transport. My dealer told me the only difference between the 2.5 and 2.7 is the 2.7 has a higher resolution USB input(which I'm assuming has to do with downloading music to a server). Of course I have no interest in doing that.
The 2.5 has gotten stellar reviews and would most certainly be a good match with my transport. Now begs the question, should I or shouldn't I????? My dealer told me he only has two left and once they're gone they will be unavailable. If I'm gonna do it, I've got to act fast. What say you Sharkies.

be on the lookout for a used dac3, they can be had for as little as ~$800. Bel Canto's aftercare is exemplary, they don't care how or where you bought their products they'll support it. then sell the CD3 and step into the future with a dedicated music server, you'll be happy you did.

While the BC DAC 2.5 is an excellent product and an even better value with a $600 discount, I think that your dealer may be mistaken. My understanding is that there are some other improvements to the circuitry of the 2.7 version besides the higher resolution USB input which give it an overall performance advantage over the 2.5. You could check on this with a call to BC, since details on the new models are not yet available on their website. Whether any differences are worth the additional cost is still your call, just wanted to ensure you have all the facts which could influence your purchasing decision. Please let us know what you find and end up doing. Good listening!

Bob...my guess is the 2.5 will be a nice step up from your Rega DAC so if you're not planning on keeping the Rega, see how much your dealer will give you in trade-in value towards the newly reduced $1,395 DAC 2.5 and if it's a good deal (compare to what you can get for it on the Gon) then for not much money you should be getting a nice upgradel Also see if the 2.5 is upgradeable to the 2.7 down the road (call BC) and this way you can future proof your investment.

Bob I don't know whether this helps you but here goes. I have a DAC3.5VB MkII ( the one that has the battery powered external power supply VBS) . Until now - this was top of the heap for BC but they have now come out with a 3.7, similar to your 2.7 upgrade . I understand that the upgrade is significant so I have sent my unit in for a relatively inexpensive ($500) upgrade . Great customer service and a commitment to allowing owners to upgrade as things get better. Few companies have more of an abiding commitment to digital & getting it right. Bottom line - you can go for the 2.5 knowing you can also upgrade later for the price difference though you might want to check to see whether the 2.5's have the new faceplate design , otherwise you'll end up paying for that upgrade too.

I know for certain that the 2.5 is NOT upgradeable to the 2.7. The only new version that can be obtained via an upgrade is the DAC 3.5 to the 3.7.
