Hi Peter.
I noticed that when I play MQA files from Tidal, some appear in the Lumin app as MQA and others as MQA Studio. You can tell me the difference between the two.
Regards

I was not aware that there is MQA non-Studio available from Tidal.

From http://bobtalks.co.uk/blog/mqa-philosophy/mqa-authentication-and-quality/

Provenance

Provenance and technical standards are completely different things. A music file can be altered after artist release, irrespective of the technology used. Provenance is indicated when MQA is played back.

  • The MQA ‘Studio’ (blue light) gives confirmation directly from mastering engineers, producers or artists to their listeners. MQA Studio authenticates that the sound you are hearing is exactly as played in the studio when the music was completed and, by implication, that this is also the definitive version of the recording at that point in time.
  • A second level, ‘MQA’ (green light) is available to indicate that although the stream is genuine, provenance may be uncertain or that it is not yet the final release.

Hi Francisco,

I found the MQA Studio description in the Bob Stuart interview Peter posted a link to:

Q2. What should be encoded as MQA Studio?
A2. The MQA Studio authentication should be reserved for new or remastered recordings prepared after studio preview or, for recordings where the rights holder is able to definitively assert that the source is the original release.
By implication, the further down the supply chain encoding happens, the harder it is to be certain of provenance and so recordings may only be encoded as MQA Studio when provenance is explicitly supported and provided by the content owner. Where there is doubt over the chain of custody, music should be encoded as MQA.

But I do not find any of the MQA/ MQA Studio differentiation in Tidal? Where do you see it, I would be interested to learn more about it.

That Karajan Beethoven recording is superb btw.

In Tidal I do not see any indication of what MQA is and what MQA Studio is. Simply, sometimes I play some disc and it appears only as MQA.

Regarding the integral of the Beethoven symphonies of the early sixties, I also think that it is artistically good. I think that with Karajan, a sector of the "connoisseurs" has been unfair to him. It is true that he was a "genius" of marketing, but from there to some affirming, that it was worth very little as a director, there is a lot of distance.
By the way, talking about Beethoven, I recently discovered the Fifth by Pierre Monteux and the LSO and I was impressed.

I agree with what you say. While not everything turned to gold he touched, I would not completely dismiss him either. But there is also some truth in the marketing part, e.g. elevating Anne-Sophie Mutter to a status she maybe did not deserve from a purely meritocratic perspective.

There is one Monteux/ Beethoven recording on Tidal with LSO featuring all the nine symphonies. Listening to it now, quite nice indeed.

Oh my God Kuopis, I think we're going to "lose friendship", je,je.
I LOVE MUTTER.
I love his violin concert by Bramhs with Kurt Masur or his violin concert by Penderecki.
(its four seasons, I do not like)

[emoji3] have heard her live in Düsseldorf years ago, does that help?

She is for sure great. But some say, and maybe that’s again the badmouthing, not quite the Wunderkind as advertised.

Need to check out the Masur/ Brahms concerto.

So, which version/album of Beethoven Symphonies (especially No. 9) do you guys think is good in both sound quality and artistic values?
