I haven't seen any comparisons of these. They may be like comparing apples and oranges, but living in Hilton Head does not allow for easy demo listening. I would imagine the Magicos need more amps than my Genesis M60 tube monos. The sound I have now is very balanced and very good at low listening levels. I rarely crank it up anymore. Mostly listen to Jazz and Classical - lot of sax and Rachel Podger violin. Charlie Haden etc. The room is 26x16 with the system in the middle of the long wall. I sit 13 feet from the speakers which are approximately 7 feet apart at the tweeters and about three feet into the room from the back wall to the tweeters. Room is multi use so set up is restricted. As Gary has suggested, speakers are not towed in much. System is two channel only.

Thanks,

99 views and not one response. Sorry Jeff, I guess no one wanted to touch this with a 10 foot pole.

Both are great speakers and it really boils down to personal preference.

Just for clarification purposes, are you speaking of the S5 mk1 or mk2? Given your room, would waiting for the Sopra No. 3 make sense? Would the Magico S3 work into your budget?

As I said, both are great speakers.

I've listened to both at length and own the Sopra 2s. I would not replace them with S5's if offered even thought the 5's are much more expensive.

Mike when are the 3's coming out?

OK, I'll bite. There's a flood of used S5s now that mk2 is out, and at the going price for a used pair, it's a great deal.

I'd buy a Magico, any Magico, over the Focal, any Focal.

Hmmm....that's quite a blanket statement. So you would take the Mini over the Focal Grande Utopia's?

As I said, both are EXCELLENT speakers. I really like the Magico S3's and Focal Sopra No. 2's in that ballpark budget price range.

Well, yeah, it shows that, to me, the two manufacturers are worlds apart, and maybe cater to two different audiences. Nothing wrong with that, of course... But it's important for the OP to know that he's considering two very different speakers, and that's what I hope to emphasize here.

BTW, I was once offered to buy that specific Focal model, and got to hear it in a very large, fully treated room. I didn't buy them :)

Both are leading engineering and design companies. Both have a great market share and both continue to push the envelope of what is possible in sound reproduction. There is no doubt that Magico is innovating faster.
