Luminn S1 or A1 questions plus MinimServer

Hello ,

sorry for stupid question but really new with Lumin gears...

the A1 and S1 can be used as transport with a extern DAC ? (Lampizator/Emmlabs/Totaldac)?

With a Synology Nas I need have to the MinimServer soft installed into my Nas Correct? is a "hard job" or relativ simply ?

what give me the MinimServer?

the soft MinimServer (and MinimWatch) muss be installed too on the computer? (i use a Apple notebookpro)

With the L1 HD is the soft MinimServer always needed or muss be installed "only" with a Nas?

Anyone can give me a opinion or say me what I need really to enjoy the Lumin at 100%?

thank you very much
Best rgds

If you are going to use the Lumin with an external DAC, you would want the Lumin U1. I am using a U1 with a Lampizator. Great combo. As far as the MinimServer, it is not an easy process to set up. I was able to do it, but it took hours and I had help from someone who had done it before. The L1 is plug and play and I am pretty sure you can also use two USB drives for a total of four terabytes of storage, also plug and play. You should talk to Mike about what a U1 could do for you.

If you want to use a Lumin with an external DAC, the new Lumin U1 is the best bet because it has a plethora of outputs, including USB. The A1/S1 can be used with an external DAC provided it has BNC. But remember, DSD transfer natively over BNC.

Yes you need minimserver installed on a synology or qnap NAS. It's medium difficulty if you don't take the time and slowly read the instructions. If you don't have a NAS, the Lumin L1 is a turnkey, sonically superior NAS solution.

No idea what "what give me the MinimServer" means. You go to the site and download it and install it on your NAS. You install MinimServer on the NAS, not your laptop.

With the L1, you don't need to do a thing but plug it in and copy music to it (like you would an external HD).

Are you debating between A1 and S1? They are both excellent and IMO neither one is better than the other. They are sonically different. Like Brother and Sister. A1 is great if you grew up with analog sounds, your system needs some warmth and a slightly "puffy" bass won't be a problem for your system because you have solid state amps and tight bass now. The S1 is best if you're relatively young, analog sound make you say "ooooooh, I don't like that, it sounds mushy" (I actually had a 20 something client say that to me and wanted to trade his A1 for an S1) and you grew up on digital. It has a sweet sound, tight bass, very dynamic and immediate. Best if your system is overly warm (tubes and Sonus Faber or Harbeth's for example).

The L1 has a 2TB (or 1TB) HDD inside. L1 does not support the use of additional USB HDD. If L1 is to be used, there's no need to use MinimServer.

S1 / A1 / T1 / D1 have analog outputs and can be used as transport via its BNC coaxial output, if the DAC supports DSD over PCM (DoP) over Coaxial, up to DSD64 only.

If you use Lumin for transport only, consider U1. It can output USB audio up to DSD128 DoP.

If you do not use L1, you can install MinimServer to your Synology NAS:
http://minimserver.com/install-synology.html

Usually you don't need to have more than one MinimServer or L1.

Take a look at Mike's excellent hook up diagram here:

Thank Bruce,

I will at first a S1 and than a L7 ( I use my pre and Pawel have a L7 to used with a extern pre...) -> the MinimServer "thema" is a point that stopped me to go with Lumin....i'm not a computer expert!
You use the Lampi with volume control with a premapli without problem? Pawel say me that willl be better go with a Dac without the volume comtrol if I use my premapli.......

You think that with the L1 is not needed the MinimServer?

With the L1 you do not need the MinimServer installed. It is plug and play. I am almost certain that you can also just use 2 Terabyte USB hard drives at about $100 each.

I use a Lampi into my preamp with no Lampi volume control.
