In my opinion, the best new music right now is being created by bands in the up-and-coming Jam Band scene. The problem is, that the recording quality is not always the best. I have a few albums that are very high quality and I would like to share. Some are old familiar favorites and others might be something you need to check out. Do you have any high quality jam band recordings to share?
Jerry Garcia and David Grisman - Self titled - This SACD/DSD recording is one of my favorite new demonstration discs. "Friend of the Devil" is out of this world with a holographic soundstage that will have you dancing and twirling before the end.
The Devil Makes Three - Self Titled - I've been a fan for a long time, but got a chance to see them live at the Lake Tahoe Winter Wondergrass Festival last weekend and was blown away by the performance. I bought this CD at the festival and uploaded the next day at home. The music is incredible and the recording quality is of very high quality. Highly recommended!
Phish - Junta - There may be a little bias with this one as it holds a special place in my heart, but the HD download quality is not only fun, but a pleasure to listen on a hi-fi system. They are all good, but "Fluffhead " is a good place to start.
Railroad Earth - Elko - I live 15 minutes away from Placerville, AKA known as Hangtown, where this band hosts "The Hangtown Ball" on the weekend before Halloween every year. Elko is one of my favorite live albums of any genre and any era. They absolutely nailed the recording on this one and if you like the bluegrass flavor, you must check this one out. My favorite is "The Hunting Song". if you like this type of music, you must check out this festival...many are saying it's better than High Sierra...and I agree!
Lettuce - Crush - I've been listening to these guys for about a year and can report that all of their albums are terrific with good quality production, but Crush is my favorite. I saw these guys at the Fox Theater in Oakland earlier this year and they are a lot of fun to see live. In fact, I will make a bold statement and say that they are the best current Funk band in the world...their shows are a four hour dance party.
