I am wanting to buy a pair of headphones for my son. They will be used mostly with computer music, for gaming and an Ipod and occasional home stereo use.
They must be Over the Ear, 50 ohms or less (don't want to have to use a headphone amp)and a street price of $120-180 no more.

We have heard the Sennheiser HD 449's (awful), 518's decent but veiled, 380 Pro's, again decent but veiled. Sony 7506's fair sounding. Also heard the ATH-M50x's which were very good, detailed with good bass and neutral sounding. They are high on the list to buy but my son wants something with a bit more warmth.

We are going to listen to a pair of Senn HD558's tomorrow.

I also have a chance to buy a pair of Klipsch Status headphones for a great price. The professional reviews are excellent. But after reading many reviews on the the ones we listened to, I am convinced that most of the reviews are BS. Even reviewers can't agree on how the same headphone sounds.

Any one here get a chance to hear the Klipsch Status?

Thanks,

Larry

A few,
Shure SRH 840 $179
Grado SR60i $160
Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear $149
Audio Technica ATH-M50x $169

The best thing to do is try to demo the headphone, personal taste matters and since its your son, let him demo the phones.

Thanks, he demoed the one's I listed in my original post. The problem is that local stores carry just about all the same headphones and many of them are on ear, not over the ear. He will probably end up with the ATH-M50X's unless he prefers the 558's.

I haven't found a PC that will drive <50ohm cans and sound decent, imo stretch your budget on a desktop amp/dac (I'd avoid Fiio like the plague) the Schiit modi/magni combo is $198 or their new fuula for $79 (the fulla + grado SR-80 would be dynamite) and spend the rest on cans. depending on your son's size, on-ear cans fit my pre-teen boys better than over-ear YMMV.

Agree if your going to listen to any music, get a decent supporting headphone amp like Rob noted. .

They are not "over ear" but they are inexpensive and they come with a lifetime guarantee. Just send them back with a $7 check for shipping costs and you will get a brand new pair. Plus they sound really really good, not just for their price. They are also foldable and light and portable.

I bought these for my daughters and they still use them, after several replacements over the years.

Koss Sportapro
Koss Portapro

(really not much difference in sound quality between them)

He ended up with the ATH-M50x's. Its detail and clarity won out over the warmer sound of the 558's. The ATH's have deeper and punchier bass. You can get fooled thinking that the 558's have more bass due to its warmth. Both headphones played loud with and Ipod and should play plenty loud with his PC.

Ohms aren't every thing. His Koss Porta Pro are 64ohms and play very loud. We did listen to a few other 50 ohm phones that did not play loud on his Ipod and they would definitely need an amp.

With that being said, he might buy a Fiio or HiFimediy amp or DAC/Amp combo-
