Hello All,

I have a Garrard 401 which was working fine, but yesterday when I switched it on it is not turning. The light comes on but it is not turning. When I increase the speed by moving the speed dial towards the plus sign it starts spinning but with a screeching sound and when I bring the knob back towards the middle it stops turning. I removed the platter and observed carefully, the speed adjustment arm which had a magnet on it is touching the spinning small disc is it supposed to because when I move the speed adjuster all the way to the right to the + sign the small arm moves across and over the small disc and the disc gets free and starts rotating but with some screeching sounds but as soon as I bring it back it jams the rotating disc. Below is the link to the video:

Unfortunately, forum rules dictate that I must have >10 posts to insert a link. so I will try and post some more :)

I was told to ask for Myles B. Astor, so sir if you are reading this i would be grateful if you could help.

Any idea what could be wrong? Or, if or it can be home fixed. Btw I don't think there is anyone out here in pakistan who can fix these now.

Regards,
abdraffay.

I attached a Garrard 401 manual in your thread on Parts Identification for the 401...

Did you fix this? It sounds as if the speed disk (the small silver disk) has slightly slipped down the motor spindle and is being fouled by the eddy brake (the movable arm with a magnet), preventing the motor spindle from turning. The two must never touch; there should be ~2mm clearance either side of the wheel. The speed wheel is secured on the spindle by three small screws in the brass collar. If they are not too tight you may be able to loosen them with a small screwdriver, reposition the wheel so it does not touch the eddy brake, and then tighten the screws.

Yes I fixed it temporarily, but the glue dried up and the magnet came off and was touching the disk but I have managed to fix it by tying the magnet with a twisty ties as to re glue I will have to disassemble the whole thing from the back which seems to risky.
