Avantgarde Trio review in Absolute Sound

Bonzo,

How is it compared to the WE loudspeakers .. ??

Very different. WE is magic - however I have only heard the big ones in stereo and they need a giant room, more like a hall. The trios can go in a reasonably sized living room, say 4m wide should be enough, though more the better.

The trios, or any other hifi speaker for that matter, will never sound as magical as WE. But WE does not do the top to bottom range completely. You have to compromise with woofers.

If cost no object, I would get a big room and the WE. But when we are talking hifi speakers, I would get a Trio (though that's still pretty costly). I would get the Trios over any panels or boxes, whether Rockports or Wilsons or whatever.

I will be listening to smaller WE later this year, in stereo. Will write about it then.

Thanks ...

Yes we do seem to be going thru a Horn revival of some sorts Did you ever get to hear the big Analysis Ribbon loudspeaker, I believe you were lurking there for awhile ,

thoughts ..?

HI yes, I love the Analysis Audio Amphitryons. They are my favorite planars. But the trios do soudstage and scale even better, with more transients and dynamics. Analysis will be slightly better for vocals and violins and midrange and piano, but the overall thing will make me want to buy the Trio more. But I could be happy with Analysis too, and since it is cheaper, might be the ideal compromise.

For me, the must listen to speakers for any audiophile are a planar (Analysis), a few horns (Trio, Tune Audio Anima, Acapella, Cessaro - mind you, I don't like the bass integration and crossover of the other horns at all, but they teach you a lot about different sounds when you listen to them). Also, with horns, unlike with boxes or animals, the next in line from the top is disappointing, at least to me. I would advise against demoing duos and extrapolating judgement for trios.

And then finally the vintage like WE. IMO, I don't learn anything new when I audition different box speakers - a few are enough, and they are easy to come by, so everyone is familiar with that sound and bases it as their reference. Analysis and these horns are indeed a very different presentation. The Vivid was interesting, though nowhere a horn

tough to beat huge horns...problem is they require a huge room.

You need around 4m width between walls. Since they go back and close to the wall, the space there is not much more than pulling out a big cone or panel into the room. Ideally you need more width between them

For length, you can sit at a 3m distance, but since you want to avoid a square room, better to have 6m back to front wall at least. Of course, the bigger the better, because they can deliver loud easily

Interesting Bonzo , thanks , haven't had the chance to hear the Analysis Audio Amphitryons, but have heard the AvantGarde Duo and do agree ...

There is a good set up of Analysis in Queens, NY. Not sure where you are located. When you do listen to Trios, listen to these newer Trios with basshorns, as in JT's review
