There's an article in the most current issue of The Absolute Sound discussing the latest 5000 series audio components offered by Yamaha. Very impressive all the way from the amp and pre-amp separates to the turntable and speakers. Ten grand each for the amp and pre-amp, $15,000 for the pair of speakers, and $8,000 for the turntable.
I'm more of a boutique amp audiophile myself, for few good reasons I guess. I'm very confident the more mainstream names like Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, and others are quite capable of building high end systems and components that are competitive in both sound and build quality with many of the so called boutique components, especially Yamaha and Sony.
I find the new Yamaha 5000 series components aesthetically very attractive. They have a touch of old school looks and contemporary practicality, similar to Luxman, that I like. For those who have a special affinity for all their components displaying the same name, you're going to love this series. In the past, there often seemed to be a compromise somewhere in the line up of components with the same name. Seemingly, not here. IMHO, if the new Yamaha 5000 series sounds as good as it looks this system will be VERY competitive with the best of the boutiques. The series is so new, it's unlikely anyone has actually auditioned any of the components. But if there is anyone here that has, please let us hear about it.
