The AMR DP-777 has a very good reputation. It includes Tubes as well as 2 different DAC chips (one 16 bits and one HD for 24 bits).

I just read that there is a new SE edition, that seems to be a major upgrade to the original 777 !.

-->Will it replace the original 777 ? What will be the price of the 777SE ? And has someone already tested/heard the 777SE versus the 777 ?

777 Special Edition: Ground-breaking technology
AMR is very proud to announce the launch of the 777 Special Edition or “SE” series. The SE series benefits from a raft of not evolutionary, but revolutionary revisions that take the sonic performance of each model into a whole new realm. Bass is deeper and more powerful, there is more air in the treble, background is darker with an overall improved resolution.
The revisions are as follows:
1. AMR Tri-Core Silver output capacitors
2. GE 5670 tubes (with adapters)
3. Quad-Core Digital Engine*
4. Additional clock buffers to lower system’s intrinsic jitter even further*
5. Re-optimised Clocking arrangement*
6. Latest XMOS interface with proprietary customised firmware*
7. Completely re-designed 4-layer gold-plated circuits boards)

List is $5,495 for the SE version which will be the only version sold now, up from the $4,995 of the previous non-SE version. But I guess no DSD with this SE version although they came out with DSD DACs with their low cost iFi products.

Retail is $5995.....The $5495 version that was announce many months back was based on a moderate upgrade but AMR decided to take the upgrade much further and delayed the upgrade.....AMR has taken the previous upgrade to an even higher level with many new parts, retail is now $5995.

Jeff...thx for the clarification. And it is still the case that the SE version will not do DSD, correct?

thanks for the info.

Do you know exactly what has been "upgraded" in the 777SE version ? Will the SE version use the same 2 DAC chips than the "standard 777" or some "better" chips ?

iFi uses the BB1793 chip for DSD (clever implementation), so quite different to what is in the AMR.

I know some of the upgrades but not all.....been waiting for the finalized version.

At RMAF Darren (distributor) told me $5495 for the SE version, which was supposed to be shipping by about now, although I have not received a confirmation.

The Mk II version which will handle DSD is tentatively set for sometime next year, I'm assuming by late spring or so. According to Darren the Mk II upgrade will be relatively minor, as the SE upgrade for existing units is quite extensive.

We will see...

As an owner of the DP777, I am not interested in "upgrading" by selling it and buying the SE version.
The law of diminishing returns in digital is very strong. I have compared various high end dacs in the same system and most often, the differences are marginal.
I love my DP777 and the SE version may be "better" but that won't be imho at the point of legitimating the trouble of selling / buying....

If I was looking for a dac for an other system though, I would clearly go for it.

Not sure if you understood what was posted, but to clarify, existing DP-777s can be upgraded to SE status, no buying a new unit, and the cost should not be prohibitive even though the upgrade involves major changes inside. That said, if you are happy with your unit as is, great, but do avail yourself of the opportunity to hear the SE before firmly deciding.

Thanks a lot because on an other forum I read the opposite. I may consider this.

Brian...from your prior post you mentioned the SE at $5,495 has all the aforementioned upgrades enumerated in the earlier post but not DSD capability which you said is likely coming sometime in first half of 2015. I am assuming that will require a swap out of the digital board or are the new quad core DACs being used in the SE version able to decode DSD and the roll out of DSD will be a matter of a firmware (software) upgrade which will be rolled out as you say in 2015. I am assuming in the scenario where it is a swapout of the digital board, I am assuming another upgrade fee whereas with a software upgrade I am assuming no fee. Any sense for this (I know I am making assumptions from what you said above but those are the likely scenarios as I see them)? Thanks.

Cyril, sorry, I don't recall the details of the Mk II upgrade, but it will not be anywhere near as involved as the SE upgrade and will be something that can be done in the field by the dealer.
