Val Shively—a legendary figure among serious record collectors in Philadelphia

“He has a store called R&B Records in this sketchy neighborhood out past West Philly,” Levinson told me. “The building is listing like the Tower of Pisa because he’s got five million records in there. It’s likely the biggest record store in the world and collectors fly in from the U.K., Germany, Japan and wherever else, in order to buy from Val. But if they say something wrong, or he doesn’t like their attitude, he explodes in an unbelievable rage and throws them out of the store.”

"On the door was a “Do Not Enter” sign, with “Unless You Know What You Want!” printed across it in tiny letters. Another sign said, “New Rules. 5 Minutes and You’re Gone.” I was puzzled, so Levinson explained: “Val doesn’t allow browsing. Most of his business is mail-order, and if you come here as a customer, you need to have a list of what you want. And if you haggle over prices, or complain that he doesn’t have something, or act just a little bit snotty, your ass is going out the door.”"

Thought it was a great read how one man dedicated his life to Doo Wop/Group Harmony and collecting records which have become the center of his whole universe.

I am not into Doo Wop much and focus most of my listening time on Jazz of the 50s and 60s but the article sure did spark an interest to explore the Doo Wop genre some more. I spent a few hours listening to The Van Dykes and a dozen others... Really enjoyed the new experience. :audiophile:

It was a different era of music and a different world...

The Van Dykes.

No Man is an Island

"No man is an island, no man stands alone
Each man's joy is joy to me
Each man's grief is my own
We need one another, so I will defend
Each man as my brother
Each man as my friend
No man is an island far out in the blue
We all look to One above
Who our strength doth renew
When I help my brother
Then I know that I plant the seeds
Of friends that will never die
I saw the people gather
I heard the music start
The song that they were singing
Is ringing in my heart

No man is an island, no man stands alone
Each man's joy is joy to me
Each man's grief is my own
We need one another, so I will defend
Each man as my brother
Each man as my friend"

Take a listen.

Sounds like the record store version of "The Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld... "No records for you!"

Cool read Serge, reminds me somewhat of 'The House Guitars' and 'Record Archive' back home in Rochester, NY
