    EVOs have arrived!

    What a presentation!
they arrived boxed of course and then they are packed in a metal foil type sealed wrapper, then in a full wood box with the SF logo and slogan burned into it. They SMELL wonderful. I know I'm weird.
They're much prettier in person. Photos don't do them justice.

I had a pair in walnut, also. Beautiful speakers…everything about them, but mine didn't come with a cat. You are in for a great treat. Enjoy!

I honestly believe the the room is by far the most important piece of the puzzle. Spending the kind of money we all do on our equipment and not treating the room is false economy. If I were to advise someone just starting out, I would tell them to begin with their room and proper speaker placement, etc.

hi Bavarian05, just wanted to see how things are going with the speakers? Also, any thought of adding a sub in the future? I am seriously thinking about adding a Rel E2 in the very near future once I finish some other minor upgrades (one more RealTrap Mondo Bass Trap, linear power supply for my music server).

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

I don't think I could be happier with a set of speakers. They feel like I purchased a family heirloom or something. Really impressive product in my opinion. They are really just the right size for my room. My dealer says to give them 300 hours to really show their best. Would you agree with this estimate? I don't think I even have 40 hours on them yet, so have a ways to go...

I don't think I will need a sub at this point. The EVOs seem to go impressively low, especially for a stand mount. In all honesty, I have not had positive experience with subwoofers. I have only owned two, but both were pretty decent quality (B&W PV1 and REL R528) and neither was able to disappear in my room. I spent many months with each one and every possible position and setting and just couldn't make them truly blend and not sound like a third speaker in my room. Maybe it's my room...I would definitely be interested in your finding when using with the EVOs.

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

Unfortunately, I have found that they only way to get subs to blend in with stand mount speakers is to have pairs and crossed low.

  23. #23

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

I have heard very positive reports from folks who have tried two subs. Maybe that's the key?
not feeling the need for a sub at this point, but I know subs can certainly help with hall sound and general ambience too. May need to try two small ones again in the future at some point.

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

I just ordered some new Nordost Heimdall 2 speaker cables, jumpers and interconnect.
I've heard the Red Dawn 2 with the EVOs and I think they give a really nice balance (adds a very attractive transient snap/definition) to a fairly smooth sounding speaker. I hope the Heindall 2 will be even better...they are being run in on the Nordost Vidar machine this week and should arrive middle of next week. Anxiously waiting.

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

I have found with stand mounts that smaller drivers and sealed enclosures is the key. Something like two of the smaller REL's just for fill.

Hi there, when you say crossed low do you mean below the -6db point? For example, the Evolution's -6db point is 43hz. So do you recommend crossing above or below this point?

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

First you would need a test CD or audio file using the test tones like on the Stereophile test disc and using an SPL meter see what that drop off point is in your room. Then start at 60hz and work down until you don't think it is over done. Will probably end up somewhere between 40-50hz. Will probably tweak it several times before you are satisfied. Same way with the volume.

Thanks Jack. I actually do have the Stereophile as well as the Chesky test disk. I will dust off my cheapo Radio Shack SPL meter and try things out. Thank you.

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

Beautiful, congrats! I agree with Jack. A pair of F113s can compliment if setup right. Many others have used SF stand mounts with JL subs successfully, paired. Depending on your room & placement, the crossover will be between 40-55Hz. Being subtle is key. The great thing about these subs is that even though they are highly configurable, they are easy to setup & adjust. They excel on "Sound Anchor" stands.

Nordost Heimdall 2 interconnects, speaker cables and jumpers just arrived.
Moving from Audioquest, the Nordost are a breath of fresh air. Transients are so much better with this setup. I will give them some time before I really do any serious listening. The amp and speakers are still running in too.

Jason...I hear the Heimdall 2s are a nice step up from my original Heimdalls. Enjoy them in good health. I think the Heimdalls and the Tyr are the best bang for the buck in the Nordost lines (whether you are talking original or current Mk IIs).

My dealer highly recommends Nordost with the Evolutions. I bet it's a great match for the Evolutions' seductive sound. I use Tara Labs for my cabling. I think it has great transparency yet an organic sound to it.

    Re: EVOs have arrived!

It may just be in the context of my system, but I am really, really pleased with this amp. The L-550AX has more than enough power for my relatively small (11'x15') listening room.
the noise floor is incredibly low (106 db) so small low level detail is wonderful. It has the current the EVOs seem to need and all the delicacy I was missing with previous amplifier pairings. Just my opinion, but I think it is one of the best values in audio currently. Hand built in Japan with custom Japanese made parts. Built like a tank as well. I'm happy!
