a1 bassperformance
hi everybody
decision has to be made between the a1 and the accuphase a-70
i know, testing them at home with the own speakers is the ticket.
well, thats not that easy, and more then this, i will buy a new speaker later on.
at the very moment i need an amplifier because my current amp, krell evo 600, broke down the second time now and i lost confidence in that brand...needless to say theyr powerconsumption is out of this world.....so they are not coming back home after the repair. soundwise i was more than happy, especially since they did deliver the bass performance i always wished.
here we are.....i know i wont get the same....the question is: how far will it go down...HOW BAD IS THE BASS of the a1? HOW MUCH PUNCH is there?
i do need to note, i am not into classic music or even jazz....deep&dark is what i like. speakers at the moment are piega....will move to magico s5 once i find a nice 2nd hand.
dont want to offend anybody.
thx and a happy day to everyone,
urs

Re: a1 bassperformance
If you've ruled out Pass, my vote is A70.

Re: a1 bassperformance
Because of all the global feedback A-70 can't play loud.
It looses control over the speakers quickly.
And later upgrade with the difficult to drive Magico S5 - my choice will be Tidal Impulse of the super matching FM Acoustics 711II.
Both have super bass performance, and beat easily A-70.My blogs Wizard High-End Audio Blog & Wizard Ultimate

We are talking about completely different topologies here. Class A vs Class AB. Tidal is very good for a class AB amps, but so is Hegel and CH. The Accuphase A70 is Class A. Of course bass control won't be as good as an AB amp BUT you will get a sweetness and midrange to die for and quite frankly, I don't think Accuphase gives up much in the bass control department.
Having owned S5's, my picks would be Vitus class A, Accuphase A series amps or Pass XA.8/XS. Even though I love the sound of the XA.5 series, I do have to give the XA.8 series the nod in the bass control department.....with the exception of the XA60.5, which oddly, seemed to me to have the best bass control of the XA.5 series.

Re: a1 bassperformance
Stereophile tested XA60.5 and finds it soft sounding.
I can understand that because of its Jfet/mostet input stage and voltage/mosfet output stage with little local feedback. My blogs Wizard High-End Audio Blog & Wizard Ultimate

Re: a1 bassperformance
T+A 3000 HV series are great sounding - A 3000 HV and it's PSU deliver great bass.
Input stage is jfet/voltage and output stage is a current type with mosfet and bipolar at the same time - great design.
And it can be switched to real mono, instead of the not so good sounding bridge type.

Re: a1 bassperformance
2 x CH A1 in bridge or bi-amp mode. CH bass is tight, fast and accurate, very different than old school Krell....

I don’t understand the whole iPhone app to control the amp approach. I like a good old fashioned remote. The new Rogers amp we have in the store is all “app to control it”. No remote. Guess what?...
